Some of the first people to recognize STEVE’s unique musical talents were renowned artists such as David Byrne, Dirty Projectors, tUnE-yArDs, Mac DeMarco, Dr. Dog, and elder statesmen like Lee Ranaldo and Built to Spill. STEVE is likely the only guitarist who has cut records with Sondre Lerche and Death Grip’s Zach Hill, been handpicked to open a sold out North American tour for Tame Impala and then provided guitar for Paul Simon’s new record.

These wild artistic relationships came to be because STEVE happens to be one of the most talented songwriters and guitarists currently working. But they are also a direct reflection of the person, the soul of a guy any artist or fan who’s met him will identify immediately. It’s the same soul that fills his songs.

Single: Maxo Kream – “Grannies”

The braggadocious nature of much rap music often obscures the fact that Hip-Hop culture sprung from poverty–an environmental response to a vicious cycle. On the Complex-premiered single “Grannies,” produced by Mexiko Dro, Maxo Kream digs into his childhood, painting a vivid portrait of life in the projects of Southwest Houston. Rhyming in a trance-enducing, monotonous duple meter flow over a haunting organ-driven beat, Maxo matter-of-factly relates memories from his time living with his Grandma, including, living with multiple family members in a one-bedroom home, stealing his aunt’s car when he caught her smoking his weed, and witnessing his uncle murder somebody at the age of 6. Despite some of his negative experiences, he appreciates his family for standing by him through the struggle, and especially his Grandma for keeping them all together. Ralo – “They Can’t Stop Us” ft. Gucci Mane

A high-pitched barker with the admiration of the Atlanta streets, Ralo has shared the studio with nearly everybody in the trap scene. However, there was one rather large name that that he never managed to get on a track. Until now. Trading bars with trap godfather Gucci Mane over a see-sawing siren of a Ricky Racks beat, Ralo boasts about his ill-gotten ends on “They Can’t Stop Us.” Premiered by The FADER, “They Can’t Stop Us” finds the two kingpins exhibiting an electric chemistry, with Gucci’s relaxed assonance (“HY-brid,” rhymes with “VI-iolent” rhymes with “TY-rant,”) contrasting with Ralo’s threatening hyperactivity.

Ghastly Sound to Release Self-Titled Debut February 24

Burlington, VT true power trio GHASTLY SOUND has signed with heavy music indie Magnetic Eye Records. The bass-driven three-piece, which fuses 90’s-era noise rock dissonance and distortion with a nod to modern stoner, doom and cult rock, will release its self-titled debut EP on February 24.

Gritty, loud, unforgiving and uncompromising, GHASTLY SOUND formed around the foundation of TJ Maynard (bass) and Ryan Lewis (drums), childhood friends who began writing songs as a two-piece focused on guitarless “volume worship and a love for party riffs”. The band’s rolling, thunderous tones blended with a splash of groove attracted vocalist Tyler Gurwicz, whose presence provided equal amounts straightforward candor and raw power. Worshipping at the altar of volume, GHASTLY SOUND’s presence is as large as it is loud; sludgy bass riffs merge with spiraling time signatures and vocal hooks cut through the noise as burning screams interweave with dream-pop melodies. Drawing influence from contemporaries like Kylesa, Torche and Red Fang, as well as no wave pioneers such as Helmet and Unsane, GHASTLY SOUND aims to remind listeners of an era when both bands and people lived authentically.
