Neo-psychedelic indie rock Pearl Earl New Album
Pearl Earl is the neo-psychedelic rock project of multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Ariel Hartley formed in Denton, TX in 2014. Originally debuting as a three piece, the band now consists of a rotating cast of original and touring members including Bailey K Chapman, Stefanie Lazcano, Chelsey Danielle, Teddy Georgia Waggy and Leeza V. The band has been in constant evolution and shape-shifting since its birth as a bedroom project on Hartley’s laptop in her early college years. With heavy nods to spacey prog and golden era glam rock, Pearl Earl invokes the cosmic nostalgia of the past while carving new territory of its own psychedelic universe. Once described as “Pink Floyd in the sunlight” the band’s live performances are captivating and euphoric with an ominous grin.

Segal-Lazar didn’t feel like she could intrude with a question, for fear of bringing up painful memories. Instead, she let her imagination take her on a journey, and wrote the song “This Old House” for him – and all the older folks whose stories we don’t always get to hear – incorporating personal details like his grandmother’s rug, faded family photos, and the embroidered tapestries.

Sweet sings, plays guitar and even adds a little bass to a brand new version of Abbey Road’s punchiest blast of rock psychedelia, “Polythene Pam.” The fourth segment of the album’s magnificent Side B medley, “Pam” is the perfect showcase for Sweet’s deft interplay of rapid fire vocals and powerfully overdriven guitars. Assisting in the track’s creation is fellow singer/guitarist Jason Berk, who adds texture with his acoustic guitar, and Fernando Perdomo who supports Sweet’s guitar with some tasteful Hammond organ. Perhaps the only thing that can be said against the track is that, with a running time of 1:27, it leaves too soon. But then, that’s what the repeat button is for!

The video to “Car Chase,” gives an insight into the recording of the new album and features handwritten lyrics by John Lydon. Talking about “Car Chase,” John said, “Typical PiL, unpredictable to the last. It’s a fantastic smash-and-grab of a song. It’s about someone who cleverly breaks out of the mental institution every night, unbeknownst to his owners. It’s based on having to go to shopping malls at night for cigarettes and wine and seeing the vast carpark space and lighting surrounded by a little village and a lot of dark trees and country lanes. It’s a really creepy scenario, what if somebody creeps out of there, like a mad lunatic?”

MOTOWN R&B ARTIST NOBY DROPS LUSH NEW SINGLE “BEFORE”
For most of its runtime, “Before” seems to fill the mix entirely, its gorgeous production finding every nook and cranny of the listener’s speakers or headphones. NOBY dances over it nimbly—sometimes ducking inside of it, sometimes gliding on top. Focused lines like “I was lost before” are sung deliberately, clear and doubled, while revelations just as stark are rendered as something closer to off-the-cuff utterances to himself. The effect is intoxicating, expertly planned, and improvisatory at once.
