Indie-pop singer-songwriter Hadley Kennary sat down recently with @skopemag to talk about her music around the release of her new EP, “Crooked Roots” (out now).
@skopemag: Hadley, tell us about your latest EP, “Crooked Roots.”
Hadley: “Crooked Roots,” is a collection of five songs that I’ve written over the past few years. They look at personal “roots” of mine that I’ve gotten to know as I’ve grown up, and they showcase my own musical/songwriting roots, too: honest storytelling, prosody, and following what feels right for the sake of the song.
@skopemag: Your single, “Orbit,” is amazing – great sound and fantastic vibe. What inspired it?
Hadley: Thank you! It’s one of the first songs I wrote for this EP. It was inspired by running into an ex at a party – that weird phenomenon of being all too present when you see someone you share a history with. “Orbit” was a deliberate decision to recognize that awkward, polychromatic feeling and dance my way through it: relationships change, and that’s ok, we’ve just got to do what we can to move forward.
@skopemag: You live in Nashville now. How has it played a part in your music?
Hadley: Nashville has played a huge part in my journey. I’ve lived here for seven years now, and I’m so grateful for the community that has shaped my story and my music. I’m constantly inspired by the local scene. The city is growing at a rapid pace, and with that comes a more diverse music scene. I’ve met some of my favorite players, writers, and artists who inspire me to grow into a better and more thoughtful creative.
@skopemag: How would you describe your music? Biggest influences?
Hadley: I would describe my music as multiple shades of singer-songwriter: sometimes more pop, sometimes more acoustic/organic, and whatever in between it needs to be for the sake of the song. There are so many artists that influence my own music: Sheryl Crow, Sara Bareilles, Joni Mitchell, Haim, Indigo Girls, Lori McKenna. I’m incredibly inspired by women who write and tell their own stories creatively and unapologetically.
