Indulging his inner rock star, DC The Don shares “Wait Your Turn,” his latest single. Built around a ferocious guitar riff that would feel at home on a Blink 182 album, “Wait Your Turn” wears DC’s emo and alt-rock influences on his sleeves, as he forgoes his lightning quick rhymes in favor of emotional wails. Emily James began her musical journey growing up just north of New York City in a household where she remembers records – by Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder to musicals and folk music – always playing. The youngest of five kids, she would set up her karaoke machine in the kitchen and perform for her family. “I took it very seriously,” she recalls with a laugh. She began taking piano lessons when she was five years old, and later added voice and guitar lessons. By the time she was ten, she was writing her own songs.

Although new to the UK, Palberta have developed a combination of a really devoted cult audience and critical acclaim over the last few years stateside, earning comparisons to some of the legends of left-field music like Captain Beefheart (Rolling Stone), ESG (Pitchfork), CAN and Yoko Ono (FADER), and Pitchfork called their last LP, 2018’s Roach Going Down “a leap to another level…[that] suggests even higher peaks to come.” Their new LP, which is called Palberta5000 (out Jan 22nd, 2021 on Wharf Cat), really delivers on the promise that their last album’s direction implied, upping the production and reconciling their sound with more traditional pop forms while sacrificing absolutely none of the Palberta-ness that has endeared them to people over their catalog to date. The band opened for Bikini Kill on some of their US dates last year and were supposed to tour the UK and Europe for the first time earlier this year before COVID hit.

Recorded at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prismatics was forced to individually record from each members’ living space in the weeks following stay-at-home orders, although it’s hard to discern any disconnection in their motorik rhythm section or the synthesizing of new wave greats. For “Every Smiling Thing” though, the band looked beyond the painful realities of 2020, delving into the unexplainable and potentially magic moments of life.

“It was really cool to team up with Saving Abel for this song. They really added an edge to it, and made this track special,” said Boondox about the collaboration. “The song itself is very loosely based on the character Spawn, mainly K7-Leetha, the neural parasite that is attached to Spawn. If I could be anyone out of a comic book, it’d probably be Spawn. He basically destroyed heaven and hell. Now that’s power! Well, I thought about what I would do with that power, and started writing.
