FRANK TURNER + JON SNODGRASS – Announce ‘Buddies II: Still Buddies’ || Listen to single now

Ten years ago, the two acclaimed musicians hung out, drank whisky and wrote & recorded an album together called Buddies – a lighthearted hang between friends that became a hit with fans of both artists. Fast forward a decade and the pair are still buddies, so they decided to write a follow-up.

As with the original, Buddies II: Still Buddies was written in just one day, although this time, however, Turner and Snodgrass had to do it over the Internet due to lockdown. With more time on their hands than usual, they were able to flesh out the album, musically, and recruit other buddies – Stephen Egerton (Descendents/ALL) on drums and Todd Beene (Lucero, Chuck Ragan, Glossary) on pedal steel – for added instrumentation. The result is a funny, warm and at times poignant album that’s part talk show, part music.

Palberta Share New Single – ‘Before I Got Here’

Their new LP really delivers on the promise that their last album’s direction implied, upping the production and reconciling their sound with more traditional pop forms while sacrificing absolutely none of the Palberta-ness that has endeared them to people over their catalog to date. The band opened for Bikini Kill on some of their US dates last year and were supposed to tour the UK and Europe for the first time earlier this year before COVID hit – hopefully, these dates will now come next year.

Nashville Psych Rockers De3ra Unveil Heavy and Dark Video via Broken 8 Records Ahead of October Album Release

Of the new single, DE3RA said that “the song is basically part two of a story arc. Part 1 is Billy Black, which is the song directly before ‘Old Scratch’ on the album and has already been released. ‘Billy Black’ is about a guy named Billy who asks the demon Asteroth for guidance, because his life is so messed up. Billy Black ends with an almost trance-like, flamenco inspired, riff. This movement of the song is supposed represent what happens when something answers Billy’s request (something like dancing with the Devil, as it were). Then, Old Scratch picks up from that point and continues the conversation between Billy and whatever the thing is that has answered his macabre request. The inspiration comes from the feeling of desperation that we’ve all felt. The idea that we would almost do anything just to make things better.

While desperation and romanticism are a consistent theme of her latest EP, ‘Stamford Hill’ stands out as one of the more direct offerings and this new video looks to showcase that even more. The pervasive kick drum represents an existential anxiety about the state of things, a brain freeze in the sun that prevents you from really enjoying the sunshine.”

Of the video, Reed explains, “This video encompasses so much of what this album is about: using love and hope to turn your little world into a big beautiful one.” John-Robert furthers, “I start things on a somber note by highlighting how little I grieved the loss of my great uncle and how little joy my partner at the time had for her sister’s holy matrimony. How being related by blood requires this almost arbitrary obligation to care/love a person. I think the song highlights the privilege of choosing who you care for. The music video is refreshingly cute and positive in tone. Showing the beauty in companionship and nature.”
