While studies have been conducted aiming to understand the science behind music, our inexplicable ability to tap into the emotions of another human being by way of arrangements of sonic frequencies still seems a bit like magic. LA’s Death Valley Girls have always sought to wield that magic like ancient mystics, creating psychic bonds with willing ears through the medium of their fiery rock n’ roll. On the surface, previous albums like Glow in the Dark and Darkness Rains were rowdy mash-ups of early American punk, sun-baked psych rock, and proto-metal fire-and-brimstone guitar worship, yet there was always an undercurrent of some kind of strange, celebratory communal ritual in their music. With their latest album Under the Spell of Joy, the band dives even deeper into that magical cosmic energy.

Uniting founding guitarist/vocalist Bryan Elkins with bassist Ed Charreun and drummer Felipe Torres, the influence of heavy innovators like Big Business, Black Cobra, and Botch infiltrate TWIN GOD’s sludge metal/noise rock hybrid approach. Torres’ drumming and Charreun’s bass were recorded by Charreun at his home studio, Radon Waves. Elkins’ guitars were tracked with original drummer Mike Tarlazzi at his studio, Chromium Homes. The vocals were self-recorded by Elkins, parallel parked in Brooklyn in his mom’s Honda CRV on a laptop during the height of NYC’s coronavirus shutdown. Elkins mixed the tracks at home, which were then mastered by Colin Marston at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves.
Mamalarky (Fire Talk/ex-Cherry Glazerr) announce debut on Fire Talk/share “Schism Trek”
Since signing to Fire Talk Records in late 2019 Atlanta (by way of Austin and LA) band Mamalarky have been building an unexpected kind of acclaim. Despite their touring plans and their scheduled appearances at SXSW going by the wayside with the rest of the year’s live music calendar, the band – which counts ex-Cherry Glazerr bassist Livvy Bennett and White Denim keyboard player Michael Hunter among its members – have been the subject of a rare mid-pandemic buzz on the back of two one off singles, “Fury” and May’s “How To Say.” Described by Nylon as “indie rock [that] summons an easy and pure joy,” the band’s scant catalog has seen them praised by outlets like NPR, Billboard, Bandcamp, Uproxx, The Grey Estates, Pond Magazine, Refinery29, Alt Citizen, Paste, Beats 1 and The Line of Best Fit. Today, the band are announcing their full length debut and sharing the album’s buoyant lead single “Schism Trek.”
Okkervil River Announces “A Dream in the Dark: Two Decades of Okkervil River”
Rolling Stone is premiering an advance stream of the entire album. “I wanted it to be sleek and fun and satisfying, a complement to our studio albums,” says Sheff in an accompanying interview. “I wanted to include all the songs people always ask for live, but I went for versions that felt like exciting upgrades to the studio versions or drastically different approaches. Over the years, we’ve had a ton of fun re-imagining the songs completely and letting them breathe and mutate; I wanted to include a lot of that stuff since this felt like a rare opportunity to put more than one arrangement of my songs out into the streaming and vinyl universe. So in a way, this is like greatest hits and a rarities record that shows you a quite different side of the band than is on our albums.”
Okkervil River Prep Career-Spanning Live LP ‘A Dream in the Dark’
Mamalarky (ex-Cherry Glazerr, Fire Talk-signed, Dehd) – Shares New Single & Announces Album
Their new single is called “Schism Trek” comes in-line with the announcement of the band’s self-titled debut, which will be released at the end of November. You can read a little more on the band at this really lovely recent Pond Magazine feature which gives you a bit more background. It’s a really exciting sound, I think. Indie rock with a timeless, well-honed quality that could sit comfortably at any point in the last 20 years of the genre, but that still brings something new in its combination of Bennett’s frank songcraft and the band’s jittering-yet-melodic proggy excursions.
BLACKTOP MOJO Release Official Music Video for “Signal’s Gone”
“All too often today, people have the option of not having the hard conversations with the people in their lives because we no longer have to do it face to face. It is much easier to “ghost” someone, and let a relationship fade in time with no real closure than it is to look that person in the eye and say, ‘This isn’t working.'” – Matt James
