“Growing up, I was all about being natural. I’d try to convince my mother she was more beautiful without make-up and that she didn’t need those expensive so-called anti-aging creams or beautifying procedures. As I got older, my breasts stopped growing with me when I was 12.”

It was produced by the band and Mikey Allred (producer of their 2015 New West debut Dying Surfer Meets His Maker). Nothing as the Ideal is the follow up to All Them Witches’ acclaimed 2018 ATW LP and last year’s standalone single “1X1.” Unremittingly forward-looking, the new album is their most experimental work to date. Tape loops coincide with unplugged minimalism. It’s their heaviest album marked by their broadest atmospheres, intimate and pummeling. Nothing as the Ideal is also their first full length album as a paired down trio, their smallest iteration as a band.

Crooning atop a muted guitar melody from Thank You Fizzle (Gunna, Lil Pump), Purpp reflects on how his partying habits have serious effects on his emotional well-being: “I was on 10 xans when I told you you were my girlfriend/I was on 9 percocets when I told you that I love you/And when I told you I love you I was high on mushrooms.” The song gets a lift from Purpp’s burbling, high-pitched ad-libs, which provide a secondary hook. “Said A Lotta Things” is Purpp’s first new song since the release of Florida Jit, his recent project.

Working Men’s Club Share New Track “Valleys”
Talking about the track, Syd from the band said: “‘Valleys’ is probably the most honest song on the record and I guess sets a premise for the rest of the album, growing up in a small town and trying to escape. It was one of the last songs we finished, we couldn’t quite get the right string sound despite layering up about 4 synths up then Ross brought in his fixed LE string synth and it sounded perfect for the song. It’s the first track on the album and one of the last songs I wrote before going into Sheffield to finish off the record. Having been in lockdown since the end of Winter in Todmorden it seems like there couldn’t be a more appropriate time to release this song.”

“Baby No More” shows off the huskier side of Anjimile’s voice, fitting for a song where he calls himself the “king heartbreaker.” Lyrically dejected but sonically not defeated, Anjimile unpacks the ways in which he failed his partner, someone named Mary. Like an epiphany, the song starts quiet and soft, with just him and his acoustic guitar. As new realizations come to him, new instruments and effects join in alongside him. Though upbeat and sunny, the song’s cheerful tone belies the heaviness of its subject matter.

Given that ROLLING STONE’s 4-star review of Beck’s Hyperspace (Capitol Records) likened his voice to “David Bowie’s Major Tom checking in from distant orbit,” it’s purely logical that the seven-time GRAMMY-winner’s next collaboration would be with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in southern California.
