ICYMI: Land of Talk share new single “Weight Of That Weekend”
Land of Talk—the Montreal-based band led by Elizabeth Powell—today announced its new album Indistinct Conversations will be released on May 15th, 2020, via Saddle Creek. The album’s first single “Weight of That Weekend,” out now, finds Powell delivering a soulful, impassioned plea over an expansive musical terrain. “‘Weight of That Weekend’ is a recognition of having been on the receiving end of a lifetime of sexual coercion, assault, boundary violations, and subsequent gaslighting. It all just came to light after an especially heavy weekend a few summers back,” explains Powell. “I was so sick of carrying all this weight that wasn’t mine to bear. So sick of being owned by all of this.

For Tilden, the making of Where Have All My Friends Gone? was a cathartic journey that not only helped his mind and body to heal from an intensely turbulent health scare but also restored his faith and trust in his artistic sensibilities. Tilden explains “Backseat Driver” “is a pretty thinly veiled metaphor for someone constantly asserting their need to control your life—needing to drive from the backseat while you steer. It could be a metaphor for medication as well, and for people who didn’t understand what I was going through insisting on telling me how to behave.” Castiel adds: “I wanted the video to feel like a surrealist home movie. When Rob and I discussed shooting in the snow, I knew I wanted to bring an element of weird humor to it and create a character that was both dark and silly. We shot on Super8 and miniDV and leaned into a loose collage-like aesthetic.”

Motel rooms and highways are sacred spaces for me – touring alone is exhausting and transcendental. Hurtling down highways, you watch the landscape change, but are removed from it. Your environs is a purchased ecosystem. Motel rooms blend together. Even in new cities, you’ve inhabited that room. When you exist in these intermediary, interchangeable spaces, it can be disorienting and psychedelic, especially after long days of driving and playing shows – at the precipice, things slip, reality shifts, the unseen is more easily felt. I tried to channel that feeling while recording Border Land, feeling outside, and considering how it feels to step out or step in, deciding whether something has just finished (“All Things End”) or something is about to begin (“Touching Down”).
