Video: Ariano & Jade River – ‘Reasons’

SoCal hip hop icon Ariano and Portland producer Jade River bring the fire once again with the release of their second single, “Reasons” from their third album, Fear is a Liar (Rockets).

This personal album and its 11 intimate songs evoke a place somewhere between two worlds, two countries, two parents, a child and two ghosts. The music, as haunted as its subject, feels cinematic with nuanced instruments and vocals, and the lyrics, mostly in French though some in English, are sometimes sung and sometimes spoken, echo with longing, unrealized dreams, regrets, loss and love. Titled “Les Testaments Du Mon Sommeil” (loosely translates to the “Testament of My Sleep”) this is the realization of French poet and writer Diego Gary and musician Petter Stakee (Alberta Cross). The music and lyrics emerge like long overdue Testaments to the life of Diego, who was born in secret and has led a life under the radar, particularly after the consecutive deaths of his famous parents, first his mother’s suicide, actress Jean Seberg, when he was just 17 followed by the suicide of his father, novelist Romain Gary, just a year later.
