In advance of her Visions short form album release October 25, today Madame Gandhi premieres the colorful and powerful video for “Top Knot Turn Up,” her electronic trap banger about putting your hair up in a bun, getting work done, and not being troubled by others when you’re focused. The video is directed by Justine Raczkiewicz and features a cast of female-identifying and gender non-confirming folks. It showcases hair sculptures of a uterus and ovaries, a queer Indian barber shop where Gandhi is our Top Knot “barber”, the Supreme Court where Gandhi is our “judge” and Madame Gandhi HQ, the office space where womxn and femmes get stuff done. Interspersed with scenes of Gandhi dancing and drumming, the “Top Knot Turn Up” dance move is a call to action for all folx to protect their energy and stay committed to making the world a better place despite the challenges they face.
“We have this surrealist courtroom scene to reclaim our own rights, but to also subliminally inspire more women and femmes and queer folks who watch the video to remember that we have to infiltrate those spaces if we do want to make change,” Gandhi states in the exclusive interview with Nylon.
