Based in Denmark, Pearl Cutten has one of the most remarkable voices you’ll hear this or any year. Combining her otherworldly vocals with her innate spirituality, Pearl has been compared to artists such as Erykah Badu and Sade, her voice being a feeling as much as a sound. Her latest single is The Pain in You, infectious soul music with a sprinkle of jazz lounge thrown in for good measure, with lyrics which deal with the reality of being in an abusive relationship but with a message that selflove is ultimately to answer.
No one forgets the first time they saw Tami Neilson. She can hush a room with an original song that channels the hurting spirit of Patsy Cline or the sensuality of Peggy Lee, or bring the audience to its feet on a rockabilly raver.
She’s an artist with real range, whose powerful voice can take on big ballads, golden-age country, heartfelt gospel, soul-infused R&B, Western swing, even old-style rock ‘n’ roll. Tami encompasses them all and is a personality-powered cyclonic force of nature in stylishly retro attire, long lashes and a stacked-high beehive.
LEON ELSE SHARES BREAKUP SONG ‘COULDN’T DO IT’
Leon explains “Couldn’t Do It’ is a post break-up song about the mixed feelings and ups-and-downs you go through during that time, which is why it will hit home for a lot of people. It all started when my friends took me to Palm Springs to help me get over an ex. I met a guy there and though I wanted to go home with him, I simply couldn’t bring myself to because I still felt like I’d be cheating on my ex. I feel like a lot of people can relate; it’s a mixture of light and dark feelings – that transitional time between being with someone and then missing them, but also wanting to move on but not being able to, which is very confusing.”

The soaringly beautiful, yet sparse, single features a driving electronic rhythm with overlaid dreamy piano textures and examines the frailty of memory. AJIMAL aka Fran O’Hanlon said about the single “‘How Could You Disappear?’ is about memory and the idea of looking back on things that you might feel you could never forget, but which also inevitably warp and change with time. Memories are mostly lost, but they can also morph and swell into something completely different from the events that actually occurred. In the same way, some seemingly banal and insignificant things can persist for a lifetime. These can have a powerful impact on our subsequent behaviours, hopes and fears, for the most part in ways that we’re totally unaware of.”
‘Anyone’ echoes the greatness of slick early noughties club-pop blended with Alfreda’s unique melodic, sound and style. The track was co-written in Berlin with Craig Walker (Archive) and produced with Thierry Fournié (Mineral) in Paris its tender piano intro transforms into sophisticated pad synths and lounge chords. The subversive production of ‘Anyone’ mirrors the ups and downs of the stagnant love Alfreda depicts in the track’s emotional self-written lyrics.

Juxtaposing lyrical introversion and sonic extroversion, ‘Graduation Day’ is an infectious combination of inventive musicality and compelling vocals, playing on the idea of mental state being its own disembodied terrain that must be nurtured and maintained separate to physical experience, an idea that is explored visually in Jamie Johnson’s beautifully chaotic artwork.
At the same time as recording their third full-length album, former Catholic chorister and lead vocalist of Black Country rock trio God Damn, Thomas Edward, was suspended from his teaching job for destroying bibles. “It really wasn’t even that satanic, I felt that little baptised choir boy kick in as I was ‘recycling’ them and said “Lord have mercy on me”. A colleague filmed the whole thing and a member of staff emailed it into the school, pretending to be a put-out parent. I think I saw it as separating the state from religion.” Themes of religion, spirituality, society and politics permeate throughout their freshly announced forthcoming self-titled album out 14th February on One Little Indian Records. Today they share lead single ‘Dreamers’.

Once again finding its musical footing somewhere along the paths carved out by Harry Nilsson, Burt Bacharach, and Emmylou Harris, the vintage tones and feel of “The Real Moon” are contrasted by the track’s contemporary narrative.
