For Skope // Michael Barrow & The Tourists – Never Stop

“Never Stop” was written by keyboard player Zach Collier. He wrote the song three months into his marriage after having a disagreement with his wife.

He says, “It was nothing big – I honestly can’t remember what it was about – but it was our first one as a married couple and enough to make me frustrated. She went out to run errands, and I stayed home to do some homework for one of my college classes. As I sat there at my desk, the thought occurred to me that as irritated as I was, I actually ENJOYED the way she bothered me. It’s a weird thought, but one of the best I’ve ever had. So instead of doing my homework like I should have, I pulled out a sheet of paper and wrote, ‘Oh, I love the way you drive me crazy. You know every way to frustrate me.’ Then I spent the afternoon writing this song, and played it for her when she got home. Lyrically, it’s really simple. But I wanted her to know that no matter what, I’d never stop loving her. And that even when we had a disagreement, it didn’t change my feelings for her.

HUSKY LOOPS ‘I CAN’T EVEN SPEAK ENGLISH’ OUT NOW

On highlight “Everyone is Having Fun Fun Fun But Me”, the band pair “pumping trip-hop beats, icy, electro vocals and lush atmospherics for the perfect grooving, post-night-out downer” (quote via Paste) that features an almost Gorillaz-esque autotuned refrain. Many of the tracks make abundant and novel use of sampling, like on the soulful “I Think You’re Wonderful”, or the eerie, pitched down hook on “Temporary Volcano”. There’s a balance of loud & quiet dynamics, with restrained songs like “A Little Something” providing a reprieve from the manic energy of tracks like “Enemy Is Yourself”. The one constant on I Can’t Even Speak English is the magnetic, boundless creativity on display, easily making Husky Loops one of the most interesting discoveries of the year.
