Introducing The 1865 – Exploring America Post Emancipation

Formed in 2017 by musician/filmmaker Sacha Jenkins (The White Mandingos, The Wilding Incident), The 1865 came to life when joined by famed session musician/Pro-skateboarder Chuck Treece on drums and the Queen of Shoegaze Carolyn “Honeychild” Coleman (Apollo Heights, Badawi) on lead vocals/baritone guitar duties. The band later added Afro-Brazilian bassist Flora Lucini (Maafa), and drummer Jason “Biz” Lucas (Dragonz of Zynth) to the mix. The result is The 1865, a band whose lyrics are just as impactful as their undeniable sound and what Jenkins says “was a great way to create contemporary music that spoke to the past, but also spoke to the same things that continue to happen over and over again in our country.”

Mesmerizing and picturesque indie folk single by Verluna – ‘Luscinia’

Verluna began as a concept album called Oku in 2015. Alex Katsaropoulos, a songwriter and producer from Chicago, was inspired by a poetic journal by Matsuo Basho called The Narrow Road to Oku. After 3 years of writing, performing, and recording this album it was released on September 21st, 2018. Most of the songs reflect events that took place throughout that period of time and all have a distinct melancholy feel. We warned you that 2019—a.k.a. Merge’s 30th year as a label, a.k.a. MRG30—was going to be full of surprises. Well, here’s one we couldn’t hold back any longer: We’ve signed Gauche, Washington D.C.’s frantic, elastic, bombastic, ecstatic, anti-capitalist, anti-racist feminist jam band.

We’re going to put out their killer full-length later this year, but until we can spill more beans on that, the group is graciously sharing non-album cut “Conspiracy Theories” and its accompanying music video today.
