New music from Liza Owen – Polite

New Release – ORKID “Wasted” Acoustic Version

ORKID, aka Matilda Melin from Sweden’s far north, continues to soar, release after release. Her fragile yet commanding vocals entrust listeners with unfiltered emotion.

ORKID shares, “‘Wasted’ is about hiding behind the comfort of your excuses. Maybe you dare to say ordo things with another you’re attracted to, when you know you really shouldn’t go there. No matter how strong the chemistry, sometimes that’s just not enough… the rush is much more fun than the reality.”

Influenced by the neon jungles of films like Blade Runner and the dystopian alienation of Cyber Punk, Deplicant sets out to transport the listener to the furthest edges of the musical universe with passing nods to techno and dark ambient sounds but with far more in his arsenal to comfortably pigeonhole. Grasping the torch lit by other IDM pioneers, Deplicant’s debut track offers a kaleidoscopic vision of our past, present and future.

Superb new soulful Steven Page track ‘Looking For The Light’ from new album out 14th Sept

Steven Page asks a lot of questions but he doesn’t like giving answers. He’d rather have the conversation in the song. And on Discipline: Heal Thyself, Pt. II, it’s one hell of a conversation.

Recorded at Fresh Baked Woods Studios just outside of Toronto and Vancouver’s Doghouse of Thunder Studio, with long time live bands Odds, The Original Six, and with the help of frequent collaborator Craig Northey, Discipline is Page’s fifth solo album and the spiritual follow-up to 2016’s Heal Thyself, Pt. I: Instinct. Musically the album funnels Page’s love of 70s/80s radio-ready soul and R&B through the heady pop prism of David Byrne and Kevin Rowland with some 80s weirdness thrown in. Lyrically it will stop at nothing to knock you on your ass.

Lead single “Fast Talk,” featuring backing vocals of longtime member Megan Messina, is out today worldwide. “Fast Talk” unfolds in hazy rhythms formed from chopped-up breakbeats and live percussion from timpani, glockenspiel, and a couple bottles of antidepressant medication. “That song is meant to be a memorial for a group of friends I had back in my late teens,” explains Tortoriello, adding, “Thematically it’s almost like a ballet where you keep driving around the same blocks, and people start disappearing from the car because they’re going to jail or dying.” The Drugstore Heaven EP is now available for pre-order.

BEN PIRANI’S NEW SOUL LP “HOW DO I TALK TO MY BROTHER?” OUT 9/21 VIA COLEMINE RECORDS

Soul music is many things to Ben Pirani: It’s positive and it’s hopeful. It’s a soundtrack for struggle, which is where soul music came from in the first place. That the struggle has been happening largely in the black community is not lost on Pirani, who is white — it’s something he thinks about a lot. “I feel really strongly that soul music is precious and must be treated with care and respect,” he says. “Anything less is colonizing the funk.” That brings us to another crucial point: real soul can’t be faked — it’s an expression of self that is so much more than mimicry of the sounds that have come before. “It’s called soul music,” Pirani says. “You’re supposed to sing from your heart and your soul and not your record collection.”
