Dead Ceremony digitise despondence on aurally organic ‘All This Noise’

Dead Ceremony is a four-piece from Tunbridge Wells Kent, made up of Christopher Stewart, David Trevillion, Neil Allen and Harry Pearce. Originally the solo-project of lead-singer and songwriter, Christopher, Dead Ceremony became an outfit and have cut their teeth releasing a steady run of acclaimed singles. They have honed their live show, including performing a sold-out debut London gig at St Pancras Old Church, playing to a full tent at the BBC Introducing stage of T in the Park, and supporting the likes of Wolf Alice and Sam Sure. A carefully delivered mixture of the digital and the organic make Dead Ceremony a special act to watch live, with a dynamic arrangement of beat driven dance tunes and fragile ballads.

Introducing Ishani with her new cut ‘Insomnia’

‘Insomnia’ is a vital and heady show of solidarity with victims of sleeplessness. Like the beginnings of sleep-deprived psychosis, a menacing and glitchy laugh taunts the listener before the new-age trip hop beat drops. It’s an ambient and cinematic lullaby to all the insomniacs whose dusk introspections have taken a psychic turn for the worst. Carefully interwoven acoustic and electronic elements make this a resplendent show of futurism as Ishani’s searing vocals call to mind the effortless melodics of Grimes. Infectiously hard to pin down, ‘Insomnia’ moves through electro pop motifs and huge walls of rock and roll guitar as it builds to its mesmerising climax. As the tumbledown guitar lines collapse away the song loops back to its beginning and Ishani coos the repeated mantra “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” a sinister reminder of the self-circumscribed hell of the sufferer. Ishani is a thrilling new voice for a generation unafraid to be open about its problems. With her canny ear for a catchy tune she’ll be soundtracking many of our long nights yet.

Samson’s new single “King Kong” (feat. Kelly Zutrau from Wet)

Samson’s “King Kong” was inspired by the final words of the classic 1933 version of the film King Kong (“It wasn’t the airplanes, it was beauty that killed the beast”), whose moral proclaims that in the end, our weapons and technology cannot not slay our demons, only beauty and love can. The song is about transformation, and the inherent danger in the will to love – in every act of creation there is also an element of destruction lurking like the undertow. But the opposite is true too. Samson is a Brooklyn-based musician and singer-songwriter (née Sam Geller) whose debut album Come Back Shane (Spotify) came out in 2015. He’s currently working towards the release of a new solo album later this year. He also continues to collaborate and play with Wet, Aerial East, Dirty Fences and more.
