The fin.’s shimmering psychedelia hits new heights in the fractal crawl of ‘Outskirts’

‘Outskirts’ marks a definite sonic turning point in The fin.’s career. Where early songs paid respectful homage to a medley of influences, (there’s a strong Tame Impala current running through tracks like ‘Night Time’ and ‘Pale Blue’, for instance, and shoegaze has been a formative influence in their output), ‘Outskirts’ sees The fin. arriving at a sound that would fall flat in the hands of other groups. Hinged around lead singer/songwriter Yuto Uchino’s canny ear for melody, texture, progression, and synthesis, ‘Outskirts’ is all razor sharp synths and oceanic production. The beat is a slow crawl and the languorous guitar lines lend it an indie americana feel without compromising on the vibrant disco sheen the group have explored recently. With Yuto’s tender falsetto vocal at it’s centre, ‘Outskirts’ shows The fin. developing a distinctive mature style with poise. Their beguiling debut album beckons on the horizon.

PORTLAND GARAGE PSYCH BAND W.I.B.G. NEW RECORD ‘WINNIE & THE NIHILIST’

In their current state of designed perpetual flux WIBG (fka Wooden Indian Burial Ground) has found some serious footing. Since 2012 Justin Fowler, Dan Galucki have consistently churned out shimmering, spasmodic psych rock of an exceptional degree. Since joined by Nathan Moore and Cory Gray in 2016, the crew has found a sort of chaotic cohesion. Many tours across the United States and Europe with the likes of FUZZ, Built to Spill and countless other groups of questionable individuals have left WIBG wise, weathered and thankful for the opportunity to shred. On tip toes and with bloody hands WIBG creates something more than songs. Their singular style is an organic cacophony of scattered metallic sway and lascivious throbbing that will leave you writhing and shaking into the wee hours.

Album Premiere: WIBG’s Rousing ‘Winnie & The Nihilist’
