Dreamville signee Lute releases first single Juggin’

The year was 1996, and things were rapidly changing in the historically Black Beatties Ford neighborhood where Lute grew up. From the drugs being sold on the corners to the escalating police violence, the reality of his surroundings was becoming too much to bear. Hip-hop somehow helped the youngster make sense of it all.

Lute was 13 when he decided to try his hand at writing some raps. Coaxed into it by his friends Jimmy Kelso and Allan whose older brother was already a popular rapper in high school, the entering freshmen created a crew of their own. “Early on, I was terrible,” he admits, “But the more I did it, the more I really liked this second outlet I had to express myself in ways that I couldn’t through art.”

Anyone that’s been paying attention knows that Apollo Brown & Planet Asia have been working together for years, circling each other in the culture, only collaborating on stunning features and remixes. The final result of the years of affiliation is a beautiful and minimal approach to hiphop.

Ian Randall Thornton shares new video for “See You Through”

“See You Through” (and Lineage as a whole) explores the values of family and heritage, so the video is the perfect visual accompaniment to the song. Ian and the video’s director Micah Lindstrom approached the video with a goal to somehow capture the essence of childhood, and the world of possibility perceived through the eyes of a child. The song itself is filled with the textured movement of Appalachian instruments that seem to meld the mountain music cultures of Asia and Appalachia.

Eliot Bronson “James” (Americana, produced by Dave Cobb)

“Dave Cobb’s honesty and old-fashioned vibe were so appealing to me,” Bronson says. “They leant themselves to the way I created. And, of course, it was a huge boost to have this great artist/producer at your back.” Cobb and Bronson had worked together previously on his 2014 release, Eliot Bronson. “But this album is different,” Bronson points out. “It’s more sparse and economical. My voice is stronger. And I think it’s a step away from the purely Americana vibe of the last one in a direction that I have a hard time defining. I’m excited to discover how this music will define itself. I’m immensely proud of this record. It’s the best thing I’ve done. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

James offers songs that are more like pictures than movies, capturing moments and digging deeply into their meanings. A stomping beat, raw harmonica and searing electric slide drives the opening track, “Breakdown In G Major,” followed by a selection of songs that only confirm Bronson’s restless, escalating excellence.
