Triathalon Reveal New Video for “Come Thru” via What Youth

What makes Savannah, GA’s Triathalon so curious is not where they fit musically—a lazy listener might lump their billowing lava lamp jams with murmuring shoegaze bands, though “indie rock” feels like the only box broad enough to contain their complexities. Rather, their curiosity is derived from the fact that they don’t easily fit anywhere, seemingly by design. In fact, as soon as listeners become accustomed to the band’s latest stylistic shift, Triathalon pivots in yet another challenging direction, daring its audience to keep up.

Nick Schott’s new track “Empathetic Hunter”

A cut off Nick Schott’s new album Shadows of Fire, “Empathic Hunter” begins fairly unassumingly, with a tight funk-tinged rock arsenal. The chorus, though – both in its first entry at 01:01 and second at 02:34 – showcases a very impressive form of infectious songwriting, in a no-frills mode that relies on melodic charm and raw vocal passion. JAYLIEN – “Trust”

JAYLIEN’s unclassifiable hybrid of rap and R&B blends sonic elements from mainstream pop and underground electronic, all in the service of deep introspection and profound self-reflection. Wading through a murky cloud of pleasingly assonant synth pads, JAYLIEN laments the state of his relationship on “Trust.” Plaintively and rhythmically harmonizing with a sped-up version of his own voice, the St. Louis triple threat bemoans his lover’s lack of faith–he never cheats, yet he cannot win his girl’s trust. Though the artist effectively conveys his melancholy, he never wallows in self-pity, returning to the track after a convincing false ending to powerfully plead for his beloved’s affection. Premiered by HotNewHipHop, “Trust,” which samples “Red” by popular producer XXYYXX, is the latest single from JAYLIEN’s next EP, coming later this year.

United Waters (ex-Mouthus) announces ‘The Narrows’ LP

“Somewhere back in the early 2000s, I encountered Mouthus, duo of Brian Sullivan and Nate Nelson, in a tiny drop-ceiling storefront venue somewhere in California’s Central Valley. The burly Sullivan and less ectomorphic Nelson lugged a drum kit and a full-size Marshall stack into the tiny, 300-square-foot room, slammed a half dozen Red Bulls, and, after pacing wild-eyed for a few minutes, blasted off into a torn-up, arena-volume sonic catastrophe that drove basically everyone immediately out onto the sidewalk. From what I could tell, it was a typical night. As releases piled up, Mouthus ripped apart the rulebook of assumed “noise rock,” building disintegrating towers of sound just as easily as murmured acoustic mantras. As the twenty-naughts melted into the twenty-teens, Mouthus collapsed into oblivion.

It adds to the already building lore of Drezo as one of the leading representatives of the West Coast’s dark house music scene.

“Tin Laurels” premiered on All Things Go with Deschain detailing it’s, “a Blackstar (Bowie)-inspired post-rock track about the dark realities of the American dream and putting your desperate trust in the wrong people. This was the first song I wrote that was inspired by the rise of Donald Trump, back in late 2015. It’s about trying to find your way forward with every economic and political force working against you and out of your control, while everyone around you gives into distraction and solace from all kinds of places, from Trump to pop music. Story-wise, it’s about Catherine coming to Detroit to become an actress, only to have the city collapse and become enthralled with a rising revolutionary that she’s not sure can be trusted.”

The Deslondes’ ‘Hurry Home’ Now Streaming At Noisey

Recordings from the early sessions, including “Just In Love,” “Muddy Water,” and “Better Be Lonely,” bear the mark of a hot New Orleans summer: a lack-of air conditioning, and creaky wood floors, which yield a languid, dreamy sound. Elsewhere on the New Orleans sessions is the feel of the city’s classic R&B, music made for dancing like “Sad Song” and “Hurricane Shakedown.” Over several sessions back at Tokic’s Nashville studio during the Fall of 2016, The Deslondes finalized the album, pushing their sound forward with new tracks like “Nelly” and the gospel-influenced title track. Downing’s songs bookend the album: the wistful opener, “Muddy Water,” recalling the “small town kids” of his Missouri childhood; and the closing ballad, “Déjà Vu And A Blue Moon,” which he says is “an ode to those who’ve spent a lot of time on the road, and maybe they always will.” A must-see live act, The Deslondes have toured the country extensively and have supported the Alabama Shakes, Hurray For The Riff Raff, The Lumineers, John Fullbright, Michael Kiwanuka and more.
