HOLY FEVER “DURESS” SINGLE

With their debut album release on the horizon, Holy Fever have unveiled another new track from the record in the form of ‘Duress’. Vocalist Todd Cooper explains the feeling behind the track – “The sense of urgency and aggression in “Duress” mimics the headspace we were in at the time we wrote it. We were toward the end of writing the record and simultaneously exhausted and filled with adrenaline as we started to see the finish line. Sam had this idea that the chorus would just be one note and the lyric would be one word. This is one of our favorites to play live.”

RHIN “CLAY”

A detailed breakdown of Passenger alongside The Obelisk premiere offers of RHIN’s output, “in representing the varied crux of the band’s furies, ‘Clay’ does well to give a sense of where they’re coming from. Mid-paced compared to songs like ‘Uncle Tuck’ and ‘Basement,’ which follows, it answers the more expansive feel of centerpiece ‘Snivlem’ and finds a place for itself between heavy rock groove and noise intensity that doesn’t necessarily ever slow itself down long enough to fall into the trap of being sludge. A bass break toward the middle sets up a shift into a crash-wash build that offers some surprising melody to go with all that push.”

Debuted by Mass Appeal, the one-take version of the “130” video follows the release of his Metro Boomin-produced single “Heaven’s Door” and finds the 21-year-old rapper and his team full of youthful exuberance, mobbing out in a graveyard of abandoned school buses in a wintery North Carolina forest. SOLIDS “WAIT IT OUT”

Solids’ 2014 debut LP Blame Confusion (Fat Possum/Dine Alone) was lauded for its revved-up take on alt-rock from the early ’90s. Its poppy melodies set against a dense, relentless soundscape pointed to guitarist Xavier Germain-Poitras and drummer Louis Guillemette’s formative years in the hardcore scene.

Their forthcoming Else EP, out on Topshelf/Dine Alone Records on April 15, 2016, sees the band checking in after a year of near-endless touring. Having played more than 200 shows in 2014-2015 with the likes of Pity Sex, Makthaverskan, Nothing, PUP, Single Mothers and Metz, the EP reflects that road weariness with a group of songs that vibrate at a lower frequency. These tracks document the waiting, the bleary-eyed confusion and the blur of days that come with life on the road.

BRIAN ENO “THE SHIP”

“The Ship” is the title track, album opener and thematic core of the album. Running at 21-minutes and built around Eno’s cyclically sung verses, the song builds in ominous drama, snatches of distant voice and creeping electronics.

Eno explains, “The piece started as an Ambient work intended for a multi channel sound installation in Stockholm, but during the making of it I discovered that I could now sing a low C – which happens to be the root note of the piece. Getting older does have a few fringe benefits after all. From that point the work turned into an unusual kind of song…a type I’ve never made before where the vocal floats free, untethered to a rhythmic grid of any kind.”

“STAY” VIDEO

Today, Montreal’s Plants and Animals premiere a live video for their single “Stay” via FLOOD Magazine.

The video was captured at Mixart studios and was directed by Joe Yarmush from the Montreal based-band Suuns. “Playing this song is like a bull ride or getting a new puppy and trying to play it cool while it drags you around like a moth on a hot lightbulb, knocking over people’s drinks and children,” Matthew Woodley told FLOOD Magazine. “You’ve got el mariachi guitar guy hyper strumming, the drummer on the other side of the time-space continuum playing a dub reggae beat, and the other guitar playing the part of Hephaestus, son of Zeus and Hera, making laser hammers in his volcano shop. The singer becomes unbound—reenacting the emotional journey of the bull before, during and after the rodeo. The backup singer is the graceful ego to his raging id. The bass is the true bond. It’s an aircraft carrier. An oil rig pumping unrefined love from the core of the Earth and shooting it into the sky in an infinite explosion of blood reds, supernova yellows and neon night blues. That’s more or less how it feels from the drum throne.”

THE SLANTS NEW ALBUM + VIDEO

On their new album, Something Slanted This Way Comes, Portland, Oregon-based Chinatown dance-rock band The Slants are celebrating more than a collection of seventeen songs. The band is celebrating their name and their victory of the U.S. Government.

On Tuesday, December 22, 2015, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that the Asian-American band The Slants have the right to register their trademark. In a decision with national implications on free speech, the appeals court ruled that the U.S Patent and Trademark Office and Department of Justice violated the band’s First Amendment rights. In a 9-3 vote, the appeals court struck down the “disparagement” portion of the Lanham Act, a 1946 law that allowed the Trademark Office to deny marks that could be considered “scandalous, immoral, or disparaging.” Writing for the opinion, Judge Kimberly Moore stated, “Courts have been slow to appreciate the expressive power of trademarks…Words — even a single word — can be powerful. Mr. Simon Tam named his band The Slants to make a statement about racial and cultural issues in this country. With his band name, Mr. Tam conveys more about our society than many volumes of undisputedly protected speech.” This victory comes after six years of fighting against the Trademark Office.
