His great-great-great-great-great-great-great (etc.) grandfather was the 14th century poet John Gower (friend to Chaucer and Richard II) and his great-great-great-great grandfather was George Frederick Root, the most popular songwriter of the Civil War era. SIIMBA LIIVES LONG
Fire breathing? Check. Lion taming? Check. World class rhymes? Check. The African-American musician born in New York, and raised in a myriad of places from Ethiopia to Washington D.C, has found an ample footing among the tastemaker set due to whirlwind rhymes whose lyrical content is thought-provoking and whimsical. As NPR puts is, Siimba’s flow is “sportive yet serious, playing equal parts esoteric and quizzical.”

For some time, Chris Staples was longing for things to return to the way they had been. The way they were before he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and his pancreas failed. Before his bike accident and the resulting hip surgery. Before the dissolution of a long-term relationship. He had been left to pick up the pieces, but for a long time couldn’t bring himself to. “I felt for a several years like I was mourning. Mourning a happier time in my life, or a time when I was more youthful. Everything was different for me after that period in my life.”
“The song is a great example of what we worked to accomplish with this new record and our live show,” said drummer Andy Lum. “With Shiver + Shake, our live show was almost identical to the album experience, whereas now we’re adding a ton of energy and expanding the sound of the new songs when we play them on stage.” Adding two new members to the band also increased its overall creative capacity. “We had no limits in the studio and could strive for something new in every song,” Lum adds. “It’s also really rewarding when you make music with people that have different influences and style, you’re always learning.”
“Sometimes you just know—a song starts, and no more than a few seconds in, a smile creeps onto your face. The actual subject matter of Blonder’s “Talk To Me” isn’t all that optimistic—it’s a story of missed connections—but those bright, buzzy synths and the faraway vocals are irresistible. If you have a pulse, “Talk To Me” will quicken it. Blonder has played with Blood Orange and Porches in the past, and if “Talk To Me” is any indication, they made the most of it.

Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé have always favoured sinuous and multi-entry songs. Hoots and Hellmouth’s fourth album In The Trees is an effort that feels like an expedition. Through dark tangles of thickets and underbrush, a path winds its way through the density of lived life, finally opening up into a sun-drenched field in which to stretch out, breathe deep and reflect on the journey… weary travelers dressing wounds while wistfully recalling tales of courage and self-doubt, love and longing.
