It’s hard to be a ‘Girl DJ’

Electronic clubbing scenes in 70’s New York and Britain’s rave culture in the 80’s have been celebrated as times of emancipation in their fusion of class, culture and gender. In a new article published by Contemporary Music Review, Tami Gadir challenges the idea that total gender equality now prevails. Are gender related prejudices still rife in clubs despite snapshots of social and political consciousness in dance music culture?

Past research has portrayed music as a catalyst for inclusivity and a liberating force from repressive cultures via experiential participation. Gadir, however, believes this optimistic interpretation to be the exception rather than the rule and that “in dance music, discrimination on the basis of gender is widespread, ranging from harsh judgements of DJs’ technical competencies, to harassment and sexual assault. What is more, it is not restricted only to commercial, ‘mainstream’ music events – it also occurs at ‘alternative’ parties that advocate social consciousness and aim for gender equality.” To support this theory, Gadir conducted 70 interviews with clubbers, DJs and producers, 33 of whom were female international DJs. Their stories of discrimination and prejudice, in stark contrast to supposed ideals of gender liberation in dance music scenes, were also confirmed by the answers of male interviewees who articulated some of those prejudices.

Fir Cone Children Debuts “Firconium” EP Via Surviving the Golden Age

Fir Cone Children is the brainchild of Alexander Leonard Donat from Berlin, Germany who started his one-man-band in 2015 with “Everything Is Easy”, which was called “The soundtrack of the summer” by several reviewers. Dreamy Punk Rock, strictly limited to 2 minutes per song, made for the short attention span of children, because it’s the youngest that are in the focus of this band. Donat wrote the first album for his then one year old daughter, now, with the birth of his second girl there comes the second one: “Firconium,” was released July 29th, is packed with melodies and pop appeal that even children can sing along to, yet the music is lo-fi, loud, full of energy, distortion and love for life, dream pop the punk way, it comes straight out of a garage in the sky.

BOYO Share “Moombah”

BOYO is the fuzz-pop brainchild of 20 year-old Robert Tilden, former singer/songwriter in L.A. cult garage-band Bobby T. and the Slackers. BOYO was born out of the gradual dissolution of “Bobby T. and the Slackers,” a project that Tilden had started at age 16.

“Bobby T.” had seen local success after playing raucous sets throughout LA’s D.I.Y. and warehouse circuit with a live lineup featuring Sanam Tiffany (Danger Collective artist “Salmon”) and Cleo Tucker (of Girlpool). Tilden then released a homemade demo-tape in late 2012, getting the project opening slots for L.A. mainstays (Cherry Glazerr, Surf Curse, The Frights, Girlpool, to name a few) and touring indie acts (La Femme, the DMAs).

Recorded with Dave Sanderson (65 Days of Static), the new single marks the start of a series of releases from the band following them signing up with Key Music Management (Pixies, Mew, Fratellis), and the future is already looking bright for the trio.

‘Make Me Feel’ is a great first taste of the soundtrack, with its laid-back tropical, synth-driven vibe that pairs perfectly with XOXO, a coming-of-age movie about a group of early 20-somethings who head out on a crazy adventure to the biggest EDM festival in America. The film follows six strangers whose lives collide in one frenetic, dream-chasing, hopelessly romantic night. At the center is Ethan, a young DJ who gets a last minute slot to perform after his tracks go viral online days before the festival. This is a huge opportunity… if he can just make it there in one piece.

Proving yet again his ability to craft a polished pop track with an edge, Adam Jensen released his latest single, “Drugs”. Of the production, Jensen explained, “Like a lot of my songs, I like to mix upbeat productions with darker lyrics. This song is about a guy who wants a girl but he can’t ever seem to have her, and the parallel is needing that girl in the same sense that someone would need drugs. It’s an addiction. In general, it’s a take on how addiction affects our social interactions. You know, it could just be a song about getting fucked up on drugs. I forget.”

Still a teenager, she was being shaped by a team rather than following her own creative convictions, so she walked way from the music world until she was ready to return on her own terms.
