SKOPE NEWS FOR FEBRUARY 17, 2017

BAYLEE MORRISON TO RELEASE DEBUT SINGLE “DISCOMMUNICATION”

12-year-old Rochester, NY-based pop singer Baylee Morrison is releasing her powerful debut single “Discommunication” on February 17th through Noble Steed Music. The inspiration for this song came to Baylee when one day she was upset that her sisters wouldn’t go outside and play with her because they were on their phones. She realized how distracted we are by technology, and that people are missing out on real life because they are paying too much attention to a virtual one. Baylee worked with songwriter/producer Elvio Fernandes of the multi-platinum-selling act Daughtry and Johnny Cummings to complete the song.

Baylee had this to say about working with Elvio, having initially met him at his Camp ROC Star: “Working with Elvio was the best experience of my music career. He is so supportive, talented and most of all, fun! I loved going to his studio to work with him and Johnny.”

R.RING TO RELEASE DEBUT LP “IGNITE THE REST”

R.Ring is Kelley Deal and Mike Montgomery. It is guitars, voices and keys. The music is sparse, abrasive, chaotic and lulling… often within the same song. It is a celebration of / departure from their work in their other bands (Kelley with The Breeders and Mike with Ampline).

On Ignite the Rest, R.Ring’s forthcoming debut full length, Kelley and Mike have enlisted the help of a few friends to flesh out some of the material. The bits of drumming that appear are courtesy of Laura King (Mac MaCaughan and the Non-Believers, Fleshwounds), Leo DeLuca (Southeast Engine) and professional skateboarder Kristian Svitak. The compelling cello arrangements are by Lori Goldston (Earth / Nirvana).

JACOB METCALF KICKS OFF 2017 TOUR FEB. 21ST IN SUPPORT OF RECENT SOLO ALBUM

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, postmodern composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Metcalf is set to tour the US and Canada solo in Spring 2017. Metcalf made a splash with his debut album Fjord (2016), which received pleasant responses from the international press community and music lovers alike for its breathtaking collection of art-folk compositions that range from wistful, unhurried ballads to swirling, majestic orchestrations, sometimes within the same song, and all set to Metcalf’s inviting vocals and non-linear storytelling.

The material for the record was pulled from hand-scrawled journals written over a decade and spanning five continents (Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America). More recently, Metcalf lived inside a four foot crawl space between a vintage store and loft apartments in order to save enough from his day jobs to complete the album. Recorded in Austin, Ft. Worth and Dallas with 30 talented musician friends, the singer-songwriter and band saw every dive, theater and city street as the ideal stage to prep the songs before further dressing the arrangements in the studio.

The Harmaleighs to release HIRAETH EP on May 5

The Harmaleighs honestly craft poetic, passionate, and powerful songs cut from a pastiche of indie, folk, pop and Americana. In January 2015, The Harmaleighs—Haley Grant [lead vocals, guitar] and Kaylee Jasperson [bass, harmonies]—embarked on something of a modern odyssey in support of their independent full-length debut, Pretty Picture, Dirty Brush. The band-mates and partners got rid of their Nashville apartment, put everything they owned in a storage unit, bought a van, equipped it with a bed, and hit the road with their 8-month-old pug Gus sleeping on the dash for the next nine months. The trials, tribulations, and triumphs of this trek would ultimately inspire their upcoming EP, Hiraeth, to be released on May 5.

“Hiraeth is a Welsh word that we stumbled upon while we were on tour,” says Kaylee. “It basically means, ‘Longing for a home.’ It’s a feeling of rootlessness and homesickness that we started to collectively feel around month six. By the end, we had burned out.”

These themes are portrayed in the appropriate cover art crafted by Adam Burke.

LESLIE MENDELSON Returns With ‘LOVE & MURDER’

Leslie Mendelson returns with Love & Murder—the singer/songwriter’s first new album in eight years. The effort is the long-awaited follow up to her Grammy Award-nominated debut, Swan Feathers. A stirring work instilled with emotional depth, Love & Murder is an apropos title reflecting the dichotomy between the dark and light she encountered in those years between. Poised for stardom in 2009 with comparisons to Carole King and Rickie Lee Jones on the tip of tastemakers’ tongues, fate as it often does, had other plans. Perhaps though, this was to the benefit of her art. After losing a record and management deal and having her friend and producer Joel Dorn unexpectedly pass away, Mendelson recommitted to herself and, slowly but surely, penned the songs with longtime co-writer Steve McEwan that would become Love & Murder.

EXTREMITY: “Crepuscular Crescendo”

Invisible Oranges issues alongside their exclusive advance track premiere, “Lermo’s caveman growls follow the rhythm of the opening Tampa ’88 riff to a tee. Martinez-Hoadley’s more savage shouts mark where the label begins to erode however. Lermo and her vocal interplay make for a special assault, like being attacked by a spiked baseball bat in one hand and Wolverine’s claw in the other. Big power chords act as transitions between Dekker’s fast-but-not-too-fast polka bounces, taken right out of the Bill Andrews playbook. That said, the groove that he and Osterhout lock into at the 3:40 mark bleeds modern Bay Area attitude. It’s punky yet perfectly taut, a sinister section that’s manipulates the skank-impulse a little too well to be dubbed ignorant.”

Hear Will Johnson’s new single, “Predator”

Over the course of his quarter-century-plus career, Will Johnson has dealt with every challenge a musician can face. The silver lining, however, is that the Austin-based songwriter excels at taking bumps in the road and turning them into gold.

A week before Johnson was to begin tracking his fifth solo album, Hatteras Night, A Good Luck Charm, he hit one such bump: His usual studio haunt, the Echo Lab—where he’s recorded solo work, albums by his beloved former band Centro-matic and side projects such as South San Gabriel—suddenly became unavailable due to a fire. Luckily, a friend and collaborator, Britton Beisenherz (Monahans, Milton Mapes) stepped in and offered up his Austin, Texas, studio, Ramble Creek Recording.

Morgan Cameron Ross New Single

His thoughts on the new direction: “I’ve been in need of a drastic change. Music slipped away from me this past while. I’ve written with and for countless talented people. Grammy winners, Platinum selling artists, successes, failures, talented and non. I scored my own Top 10 Billboard song with my pop band, Bellwoods a couple years ago even. So why put out my own dark and melancholy music? I started out as a young kid running my University radio station. I listened only to old folk music and political punk tunes. I can still recite every single damn Weakerthans or Shins lyric. Two years ago I got off a stage in some arena with my band and the headliners were about to go on. They do well and have some hits but they’re also close to 40 years old and every single damn one of them were wearing bedazzled shoes. It was that moment right there that I knew I had to start putting out music like this song I’m sending you right now again.”

Sam Rae captures eyes and ears with an alluring honesty as she blends her improvisational performance past with midwestern folk roots, and a curious soul-filled voice.

Through her arrangements, she hones in on the dance between intimacy stirred up from the past & spontaneity influenced by the present. These songs represent a love history from child to adult, one that she channels eloquently as a shapeshifting kind of story.
