NEWS: The Claudettes probe both personal and national moods in new album ‘High Times in the Dark’

Johnny Iguana’s piano is still at the center of The Claudettes’ rockin’ roots music, but the sublime singing of Berit Ulseth steals the spotlight on the band’s fifth release, High Times in the Dark, due April 3 from Forty Below Records. Produced by Grammy winner Ted Hutt (Violent Femmes, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Devil Makes Three, Lucero), this richly atmospheric album conjures images of Julie London and Allen Toussaint fronting a ’60s hot-rod band. It’s a 13-song smorgasbord of vintage yet vital sounds the band calls “garage cabaret.”

Introducing The Lazy Eyes | Debut single “Cheesy Love Song” out now

A patient, slowly unspooling track built around languid piano, echoing guitar lines and vintage soaked vocal melodies and harmonies, “Cheesy Love Song” is content to take its time introducing the band, letting its tonal and textural choices lazily mutate from flourishes of soft strings and warm synthesizers into heavy-handed drumming and wild guitar sirens. Bringing a meld of pedal-effected psychedelia and 60’s pop-inspired chord progressions, they evoke the tenderness of The Flaming Lips and the pocket symphonies of Brian Wilson.

As NoMBe draws in listeners with his dream-like vocals, Klingande transforms the original into a groovy dance track filled with mid-tempo drums, momentous drops, and an infectious hook.

JACQUE MARIE MAGE RELEASES SPECIAL COLLABORATION WITH VELVET UNDERGROUND

Jacques Marie Mage (JMM), in conjunction with UMe, is proud to present “White Light,” limited edition eyewear named after The Velvet Underground’s second album, White Light/White Heat, and directly inspired by those actually worn by founding band member, John Cale.

The glasses are the first in a series of spectacles that seek to capture the counter-cultural cool of one of the most influential bands ever. As Brian Eno once famously claimed, although the band sold only 30,000 records in the first five years of its short tenure, “Everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band.”

The Slow Readers Club announce new album ‘The Joy Of The Return’

Opening to an energetic blend of driving drums and infectious guitar lines, the track builds through evocative verses and anthemic choruses, imbued with their idiosyncratic brand of insightful and confronting lyricism and set against relentlessly danceable and energy-provoking instrumentation, and premiered with Chris Hawkins on BBC 6Music. “‘All I Hear’ is about a lack of agency and an inability to affect change. That there’s something happening, and you have no choice but to go along with it,” explains singer Aaron Starkie.

Introducing Afonso with meditative soul and jazz single ‘Golden Hour’

‘Golden Hour’ is the debut single of Afonso. It explores the conflict between the various sides of the singer’s personality. Afonso finds himself contrasting his younger and older self and how he wishes to go back to his simpler, young life. To the singer, the golden hour represents the time in a day, where all sides in his personality combine into one harmonised and centred being. This is shown through a soothing, lullaby-like sound that guides the listener through this journey, colliding into the warmest chorus. The song builds in several dimensions through angelic guitar lines and silky vocals. ‘Golden Hour’ encourages a colourful visual interpretation, drawing the listener into the singer’s dreamy world.

Marion Belle – ‘Soundcheck (single)’

Since 2013, Marion Belle has been a cult crooner whose new wave anthems are known for their blend of lushness and swagger. Through dream pop outfit Fatal Jamz he has fashioned a sound at once as heavenly and as thugged out as the LA streets he can’t escape. He was asked to open Sky Ferreira’s “Night Time, My Time” Tour across the US when Smith Westerns lead singer Cullen Omori heard the underground single “Rookie.” After the 2016 release of “Coverboy,” an LP I-d called “a glam-rock Romeo & Juliet,” Belle starred in the video for Weyes Blood’s lead single “7 Words,” which was followed by a tour. A frequent collaborator, Belle has produced 2 tracks with Sean Bowie of Yves Tumor, and most recently released a 5 song ep in conjunction with the late Test Icicles founder Sam Mehran, which Pitchfork premiered last year.

The Heliocentrics – Burning Wooden Ship (Madlib Invazion single)

London-based The Heliocentrics have long stirred a bewitching brew of funk, jazz, psych and library influences. Labelled by Pitchfork as “a live-band culmination of every obsessive hip-hop-era producer’s drive to fall deeper into a rabbit hole of the previously unheard”, the band’s far-reaching influence meant a natural knock-on in being cited by hip-hop royalty: namely, featuring on DJ Shadow’s ‘Skullfuckery’, from 2006’s ‘The Outsider’ LP, and being sampled by Nas and Kanye West on the track ‘Everything’, featured on 2018’s ‘Nasir’ album.
