Today, Kahil El’Zabar’s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble share “Lonely Woman”, the fifth and final new single taken from their forthcoming album ‘Spirit Gatherer – A Tribute To Don Cherry’ out April 21 on Spiritmuse. The track was originally penned by Don Cherry’s close collaborator, Ornette Coleman and released on the 1979 album ‘Old and New Dreams’ with Don Cherry, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell. Now reimagined by veteran bandleader and composer Kahil El’Zabar, whose percussion adds gravitas, while Dwight Trible’s divine, deeply wistful vocals provide lyricism, and David Ornette Cherry’s piano contributes grace and drama to this Coleman anthem. This a tribute to the great Don Cherry, as never heard before.

Hüsker Dü announce “Tonite Longhorn,” previously-unheard live album from 1979-80
Hüsker Dü has announced TONITE LONGHORN, a previously-unreleased double-disc set of rare live recordings from the legendary band’s embryonic on-stage beginnings. Drawn from the historical Hüsker Dü recording archives compiled by late sound engineer Terry Katzman, the album collects 28 explosive tracks captured over four different nights between July 1979 and September 1980 at Minneapolis, MN’s notorious Longhorn Bar. TONITE LONGHORN arrives via the band’s own Reflex Records at all DSPs and streaming services on August 25, 2023. A limited edition 2xLP black vinyl release will be available on Record Store Day, Saturday, April 22 at participating stores. Stay tuned for news about further pressings later this year.
UK Folk Icon Shirley Collins Announces New Album ‘Archangel Hill’
The first song to be shared from Archangel Hill is “High And Away”, with words by collaborator Pip Barnes. He says of its origins: “There is a passage in Shirley’s book ‘America Over The Water’ where she relays a conversation with the Arkansas singer Almeda Riddle in 1959. It begins: ‘She told of the tricks a tornado can play’ and goes on to give four or five examples. Whenever I heard Shirley read this, I would note that alliterative and rhythmic first line of the passage, and the vividness of the images of a tornado’s doings, and say to myself, ‘There’s a song here, it’s almost written itself.’ I wrote the words, but with no strong idea of a tune for it, other than that it seemed to suggest itself into ¾ time. Shirley obliged with a tune of her own devising, and Ian with its arrangement.”

This Is The Kit, the Paris-based group led by Kate Stables, today announced the band’s new album Careful Of Your Keepers–produced by Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals)–will be released on June 9th, 2023, via Rough Trade Records. The album’s propulsive and introspective lead single “Inside Outside” finds Stables as magnetic as ever, joined once again by her stalwart band of Rozi Plain (bass/vocals), Neil Smith (guitar), and Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums), and accented by a cascading horn quartet arrangement by Jesse D. Vernon. The track arrives alongside a video directed by Hannah Owen that features Stables and a pair of dancers capturing the song’s ebullient charm. Stables explained the song’s reflective lyrics:
