Distant Fires was recorded at MRX in the SODO district of Seattle in November 2019. Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City, Yautja, Floor) lent his recording and engineering skills to the album, giving it a big, natural, roomy sound well-suited to HEIRESS’ organic approach and tone-obsessive timbre. The album was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege in Portland. Though steeped in despair, Distant Fires is a slow-burner of an album that reveals a new dimension of its power with each listen.

Putting her stamp on a beloved ’00s rap hit, Big Jade samples Lil Mama in her new “Lip Gloss” freestyle and music video. The song’s instantly recognizable boom-clap beat is the ideal canvas for Jade to inject her East Texas attitude, peppering in references to the original song while attacking the beat from a wholly different angle than Lil Mama tried in the original song: “B*tches don’t like me/And Ion like hoes neither/And I don’t care if y’all was friends/I don’t need y’all neither.” In the video, a green-haired Jade relaxes in the studio with her team as she shows off her skills. The son of novelist Eve Becker and visual artist Bill Liebeskind, Leo was born in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and raised in a community in Upper Manhattan full of New full of art and music. His maternal grandfather and first teacher, Eugene Becker, was the second chair violinist in the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein, and pushed Leo to play music and start learning the violin at just three years old. Though the violin didn’t seem to click, Liebeskind did spend hours as a young child at his dad’s piano, teaching himself until his parents let him quit violin and take piano lessons instead when he was ten.

Beks shares cinematic video for ‘Devoted’
A lighthearted take on six films, the video includes iconic scenes from Titanic, Dirty Dancing, Love Actually, The Notebook, Spiderman 2, and Ghost, retelling them with the narrative of ‘I’m not devoted to you’ – Bek’s punchy antithesis. From Rose pushing Jack into the icy water of the Atlantic Ocean to an overwhelmed Baby sprinting out of dance rehearsals with Johnny, a newly-heartbroken Beks daydreams these classics with revised bitter endings. As a queer artist, it was also important for Beks to include a diverse cast of twenty dancers, paying homage to her hometown of Brisbane, performing outside the iconic Fortitude Valley Music Hall. Each cast member was dressed in unique, up-cycled creations from Brisbane fashion designer Kimbra Lou. Beks’ also aimed to lessen her footprint and further flex her creativity, by thrifting or DIY-ing all other props and styling: “I made the door for the titanic scene out of a boggy board and cardboard. The project was fully arts and crafts home job!”, explains Beks.

The album, which was produced by Bradley Cook (Bon Iver, Kevin Morby, The War on Drugs) and R.M.B.—the production trio of Rateliff, Patrick Meese (The Night Sweats) and James Barone (Beach House), is out November 5th on Stax Record. “‘The Knack’ is the only song about romantic love on ‘INSIDE’,” says frontman Ryan Guldemond. “It finds the narrator confessing to a lack of talent in the domain while also expressing a strong desire to mature, but without doing the work. 2020 was a year when relationships were likely challenged and re-evaluated widely and, without doing the work, were prone to break down. This is akin to the relationships we have with ourselves, that being the central theme of ‘INSIDE’: the self. ‘The Knack’ was a way of reiterating this theme through the lens of romantic love.”

“I never intended for the Botany title to be an avatar for myself,” Spencer Stephenson describes. “It has always simply been the name I’ve put on whatever I’ve put out, and was meant to be totally freeform. But over the years, it feels like there’s a little bit of a mitosis that’s happened whether I want it to or not, and the name has crystallized into something that sets parameters for me, instead of the other way around. I feel compelled to get away from that a bit.”
