The album was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege in Portland. Though steeped in despair, Distant Fires is a slow-burner of an album that reveals a new dimension of its power with each listen.

The son of novelist Eve Becker and visual artist Bill Liebeskind, Leo was born in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and raised in a community in Upper Manhattan full of New full of art and music. His maternal grandfather and first teacher, Eugene Becker, was the second chair violinist in the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein, and pushed Leo to play music and start learning the violin at just three years old. Though the violin didn’t seem to click, Liebeskind did spend hours as a young child at his dad’s piano, teaching himself until his parents let him quit violin and take piano lessons instead when he was ten.

A lighthearted take on six films, the video includes iconic scenes from Titanic, Dirty Dancing, Love Actually, The Notebook, Spiderman 2, and Ghost, retelling them with the narrative of ‘I’m not devoted to you’ – Bek’s punchy antithesis. From Rose pushing Jack into the icy water of the Atlantic Ocean to an overwhelmed Baby sprinting out of dance rehearsals with Johnny, a newly-heartbroken Beks daydreams these classics with revised bitter endings. As a queer artist, it was also important for Beks to include a diverse cast of twenty dancers, paying homage to her hometown of Brisbane, performing outside the iconic Fortitude Valley Music Hall. Each cast member was dressed in unique, up-cycled creations from Brisbane fashion designer Kimbra Lou. Beks’ also aimed to lessen her footprint and further flex her creativity, by thrifting or DIY-ing all other props and styling: “I made the door for the titanic scene out of a boggy board and cardboard. The project was fully arts and crafts home job!”, explains Beks.
