Hillsburn releases new album, Slipping Away

Hillsburn’s latest album is a portrait of a society fraying at the seams, and it feels alarmingly familiar in the COVID era.

Recorded in Vancouver as the pandemic set in in March 2020, Slipping Away confronts the inane monotony of so much of our collective existence, the struggle to get by, and our reliance on alcohol/television/food/pills/fill-in-the-blank to provide the much needed respite that allows us to keep going. On its face, this might seem like a bleaker vision than songwriter Paul Aarntzen has previously put forward, but the characters that inhabit these songs aren’t hapless victims. They know the score. Their pain is cast not as requiem, but as prelude — there is a sense that they take stock in order to chart a new course. There is, after all, freedom in seeing things as they are.

With hits like “Happier” and “Alone” nestled in his boundary-pushing discography, it’s clear that Marshmello has always been interested in the emotional possibilities of dance music—a theme that “Back In Time” furthers. Calling back to the energy of ‘90s rave tracks, the propulsion of classic techno, and the gleaming refractions of Eurodance, the song is energetic and nostalgic, perfect for creating new dancefloor memories while remembering all your favorite nights out.

Biting New Single & Music Video From THEO KANDEL, Out Today (5/28)

“We suffocate and squeeze too hard,” affirms rising alternative-pop singer-songwriter Theo Kandel in the opening of his latest single, “Anaconda Hearts,” out today. Comparing a broken relationship to the strength of an anaconda in the new song, Kandel’s music video brings the metaphor to life with the help of boa constrictors. Yesterday, Ones To Watch debuted the single and raved, “‘Anaconda Hearts’ begins with a dreamy soundscape featuring horns and sultry guitar picking that sets the scene for listeners…The music video for the single is an equally enthralling yet simplistic piece of art.”

“Rainbow” is a haunting and hypnotic love song. The video directed by Takuto Shimpo is eerie and spellbinding as Grace’s vocals charm a hotel’s naive bellhop. The song is soulful complimented by trap-pop beats. “Rainbow” is a darker take on PICNIC which showcases Grace’s knack for creating airy pop-fused R&B music.

“Hear Me Say” is a hands-in-the-air house track, designed to soundtrack reckless abandon. Neon synth programming gilds LÉON’s affecting vocal, magnifying the depths of the emotion. Jonas’ production is detailed but tasteful, nodding both to the fizzy history of rave music and sleek classic house tracks. As LÉON sings of romance lost and found, the track builds to a buoyant climax, underscoring one of dance music’s great promises. No matter how you’re feeling when you get to the club, you can always dance through the pain.

‘Magnolia’ – Timid, the Brave Single

Magnolia captures the initial thrill and nervousness of new love. I wrote most of the song on the walk home from my first date with my wife. It was early May, and we had spent all afternoon wandering the botanical gardens together. There was this air of uncertainty that all first dates have, where you seem to be connecting but you can’t help but ask yourself, “Are they feeling what I’m feeling right now? Are we thinking the same things?”

As he did for his 2020 full-length Signals, Davies teamed up with acclaimed visual artist Jesse Draxler (Daughters, Poppy) for the artwork. The stark, black-and-white piece that Draxler contributed for the cover of Spies perfectly captures the mood of the record. Eyes are cut out, disassociated from faces, their gazes made inscrutable. The artwork and music share a similar effect, akin to the tingle one gets on the back of their neck when they sense they’re under surveillance — a feeling some psychologists have dubbed the “psychic staring effect.”

Arctic synth pop artist RIIT covers AWOLNATION’s “Sail” for mental health awareness

Riit voices her support for year-round mental health awareness with a new cover of AWOLNATION’s “Sail.” Distilled to sparse strums and whisper synths, Riit’s version peels away the mammoth drops and superhero-sized production of the original to reveal the stark, gutsy vulnerability of the message.
