Briars of North America shares “Seventh Brew” video from forthcoming Brassland debut

“The life of a song is a curious one. This began as an improvisation that Greg started on the bass and I was singing along trying to follow an elusive melody just out of reach. It felt like I was grasping for wisps of a cloud. We called it Seventh Brew at the time because we had been drinking copious amounts of pu-erh tea Jeremy had brought back from his most recent trip to China. Later, I was tasked with writing words for it, while spring was in full bloom. I sat on the back porch of a Quaker meeting house in Plainfield, Vermont watching the grass grow and leaves dance in the wind, while pondering divinity in all things and my quest for meaning. It was a Quaker meeting between me and all of nature. The words came quickly, and listening back, I realize it was a plea to find my own peace. In the very beginning of the song you hear a sample of a piece I recorded many years earlier about a vision I’d had on a sunny afternoon of a dying angel in the hayfield across from the home I grew up in.”

Cautious Clay and Saba Link Up on “Strange Love”

“This song is about the push and pull of identity in late capitalism,” says Cautious. “We’re constantly told we need x, y or z to let the world know who we are, inundated with information about what the latest and greatest and coolest is. I love fashion and clothes and putting them together to telegraph myself to the world, but sometimes it’s hard to separate what I like from what I’m being told to like. I think it’s a struggle lots of people can relate to.”

This song reflects that silent screaming feeling that so many of us now know so well.”

I love being the underdog because that means I have something to prove. When people don’t believe in me it ignites this insane passion and dedication to my craft. I knew I wanted to make something that was unapologetically me and absolutely off the wall, so I connected with Andrew Wade. We created a studio atmosphere that embraced each other’s authenticity.
