US based atmospheric, indie pop tune ‘Zebra’ is out
Zebra by Cal in Red is a looming, atmospheric, indie pop tune, and the latest single from brothers Connor and Kendall Wright. Throughout, listeners will hear Kendall’s falsetto pleading overtop bright guitars, groovy bass, and punchy drums. The choruses present the full spectrum of Cal in Red’s sound when soaring harmonies, strings, and fuzz come in to disarm the “morning sunlight” while also giving listeners a reason to dance.
Zebra was recorded in a couple different locations, all basements and bedrooms. The drums were recorded and produced with the help of Max McKinnon (cousin of the brothers) in his basement studio. Everything else was done in Connor’s bedroom. The actual recording process was pretty sporadic as they currently live an hour apart. After full days of work (both currently work 2-3 jobs, often amounting to 10-12 hour days), Kendall would make the drive and they’d record well into the night any chance they got. Vocals, bass, and guitar were done by Kendall. Drums and synths along with the mixing of the track are credited to Connor.

It’s about the idea that we belong to each other.”
“We are the apes that are starting to understand the universe and our place in it,” says González. “We are changing our surroundings in an exceedingly rapid pace, so much that we’re becoming stewards of our planet whether we like it or not. As Stewart Brand said, ‘We are as gods and we have to get good at it.’ The lyrics came to me in early February 2020 just as there were more and more tweets about the possible pandemic. The topic of the song felt very timely. You can hear the birds and ambient sounds from the veranda, along with a layer of synth loops in the background.”

Video director Bahareh Khoshooee animated a music video for “Rain and Cicadas” primarily using The Sims and provided a statement over email: “A nod to Seretan’s videos and images that were made during his residency, this work explores the sensation of retrieving a memory, an intrusive thought, a dejavu, or perhaps a dream.” Using game language, Khoshooee plays with the idea of reality vs simulation and blurs the line between the two; the video acts as a visual stream of consciousnesses essay dipping in and out of digital landscapes that resemble familiar scenes and yet due to their digital limitations feel strangely uncanny.

Dais Records announces GETTING THE FEAR collection LP ‘Death is Bigger 1984-1985’, stream a track now!
It’s testament to how fertile England’s mid-80’s musical landscape was that the splintering of short-lived post-punk pioneers Southern Death Cult seeded so many memorable but divergent groups – from widescreen rock legends The Cult to romantic pop duo Into A Circle to “the Asian Public Enemy,” Fun-Da-Mental. But the band’s most potent subsequent cross-pollination was undoubtedly Getting The Fear, formed by The SDC’s rhythm section of Barry Jepson, David ‘Buzz’ Burrows, and Aki Haq Nawaz Qureshi, joined by Temple Ov Psychic Youth associate Paul ‘Bee’ Hampshire on vocals.
