HOKO release official music video for latest single ‘Big Mistake’
Fresh off the back of the release of their debut project HEATHEN, New York’s HOKO have released a new set of visuals for their latest single, ‘Big Mistake’.
Directed by James Mountford, the video puts HOKO songwriter and lead vocalist Nathaniel Hoho to work, bringing new energy to an already spirited original.
Her debut EP consists of eight original songs. It opens with “Girls Night” which is the ultimate party song anthem for girls looking to have fun with friends and not care about school or boys. “Nothing Better” follows two people in a relationship, inspired by the old-fashioned kind of love. She was moved by what she saw in the movies of gentlemen opening the door and bringing flowers, the antitheses of today’s digital age of romance. “Snake” is a song about a manipulative person who comes across as someone they’re not, but after a while their true colors come out. “Gemini” tells the story of an old relationship where toxicity loomed. It continues on to “Runaway” which came to life after a deep conversation with her sister about anxiety, depression, and suicide amongst her peers. The song is meant to uplift and inspire people going through struggles and give hope. “Superstar” is a song to give people confidence shining a light on everyone’s individual and unique beauty. Also on the EP is dance track “Chase” featuring actress/singer Jadah Marie with part of the proceeds going to clean beaches in Brazil. It finishes off strong with “On My Own,” featuring Sony Records artist King B; a power anthem for the independent girl. Keelie hopes fans identify with her music so that they feel uplifted and less alone in the world.
Influenced equally by the y2k pop of Billie Piper and the smooth R&B of Destiny’s Child as well as the sounds of Mary J. Blige and Luther Vandross that permeated her childhood home, Cariss cites the likes of Bree Runway, Denai Moore and FKA twigs for the blueprint of her sound; “women unafraid to do what they want, entirely liberated in their art, refusing to be boxed into one genre.”
