While the title of the track may imply a possible homicide, the figurative murder signifies the protagonist’s triumph over his opponents with his weapons of choice, the dabber and the bingo card. “Joyful Girl” has always been my favorite Ani song, even more so after I started watching her perform it live when we were on tour together with my band Pearl and the Beard in 2012. The tune is so melancholy and the words are so hopeful, which is the perfect marriage of what it means to love ourselves – it’s not easy, and it’s not always intuitive, but this song gives me the feeling that making the effort to rise above my own self doubt is always worth it. It was the obvious choice as a cover to include in my first episode of Self Love Sundays on Righteous Babe Radio, and Emily Hope Price [of Pearl and the Beard] was the obvious choice of collaborators. Her cello and arrangement sing the feeling of longing and strength I hear in “Joyful Girl”‘s message, and her deep involvement on my record PUSH made this one of many collaborations with Emily even that much more joyful and powerful. – Jocelyn Mackenzie

With an official single in their hands, that came together so seamlessly, the question almost inevitably came about, “did we just form a band?” and thus Did We Just came about.

Gillespie, a Kenny Ortega protégé (“Julie and the Phantoms” director and executive producer), and Shepherd met while on set of an Ortega-directed live production of the rock musical Hair in which they were cast opposite one another in the lead roles. “I’ve been eager to collaborate with Charlie again – his lively spirit is infectious and he’s a great friend of mine. He was the perfect person to help me bring this song to life,” shares the 18-year-old New Mexico native.

We find Cass going to the store to buy bread (for toast) and returning home. But during this simple errand we learn many things about the mysterious troubadour’s character as well. With a second hand blessing from man himself we release this track into the world not as Woody and Jeremy but as apostles of McCombs.”
