Electric Religious – “CATHERINE”

I have been working to reconnect with my Indigenous ancestry and learn more about my Métis culture. I find myself thinking about the moment my ancestors on Turtle Island merged with my European ancestors in the Haudenosaunee Confederacy of Northeast North America. My Scottish forefathers, the Campbell’s, expanded the Northwest Trading Company’s routes, moving towards the western prairies and bringing with them their Mohawk wives and children. My curiosity about my lineage led me to the Iroquois, and the life of Catherine Tekakwitha, and the dichotomy of an Indigenous laywoman canonized as a Saint by the Roman Catholic church.⁣⁣

Out Now on Netflix: Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell

It’s impossible to overstate the impact of The Notorious B.I.G.–he forever changed the art of rhyming with sharp storytelling and boundless charisma, redefined the commercial possibilities of rap stardom, and embodied the rough-and-tumble hustle of his home borough of Brooklyn. But before he was Biggie Smalls, he was just Christopher Wallace–ambitious, sweet, if a bit of a troublemaker. A loyal friend and the apple of his mother’s eye.

Electronica duo Paperdeer shares visually striking music video

Fortress is the second single from the upcoming album of the Hungarian electronic music band, Paperdeer. This music video carries on with the carefully constructed yet cool electronic beats now accompanied by a female voice. Complex lyricism, inventive visuals, and compassionate storytelling are all parts of this next piece of art. “The lyrics of Fortress can be interpreted in many ways. In my opinion, it is a cry for help. It is enough if you look around: climate change, COVID-19, and political tension are the things that we are faced with and also the burden of uncertainty that it suggests. In the middle of this chaos, I would just want to shout at the top of my lungs to make it stop and to seek meaningful changes otherwise, the consequences will be fatal” – says vocalist Böbe Szécsi, a long-time collaborator of the band. Musically, the tension is linearly building up, which ties in with the main character’s growing frustration. Though, the overall result remained relaxed and more within the realm of pop so that the edge is taken from the heavy narrative.

How Kyrie Irving & Naomi Osaka Inspired Teenage Alt-Rap Duo Tm & Remy On New Single ‘Leaders’

Whereas most people around their age group follow the latest trends and fashion, teenage alt-rap duo Tm & Remy don’t, they prefer following their own path and inspiring others to be different. ‘Leaders’ sees the two play a key role in kicking motivation for their peers into gear. Built over a trap-infused production with a memorable hook, the song is about resilience on the road to success. Strong leaders (like the ones on the artwork: Kyrie Irving, Naomi Osaka, Lionel Messi and Anthony Joshua), demonstrate that both failures and triumphs can be valuable. The struggle, and what you learn along the way makes you who you are.

Graduation Speech “Small Apartment” Music Video

In November of 2019, Kevin Day released his second solo EP under the moniker Graduation Speech. The project has been a vehicle to explore more acoustic and indie-rock soundscapes as opposed to the punk leanings of his band Aspiga. Maintenance Required expanded on the ideas found on Quiet and Calm by introducing layers of instrumentation and stepping further out of earlier comfort zones. “Small Apartment” might be the best example of this exploration. The chorus pulses with pounding toms and glinting accents, but each verse creates open space for acoustic chords and harmonic notes to breathe and bend into infinity. Now the song has an accompanying music video filmed by Brian Mietz and you can view it now at The Key (XPN). Maintenance Required is available both physically and digitally from Black Numbers.
