Imari Tones are a Christian heavy metal band from Japan, where majority of people believe in Buddhism and Christianity is very scarce. The band was formed in 2004 but the real start was in 2008, when they declared themselves as “The first Christian metal band from Japan”. Since then, Imari Tones toured in and out of Japan, while making many albums independently.

The new album comes produced by Ali Chant (previous work includes Portishead, PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius) and features Andy Monaghan of Frightened Rabbit (on the track, “Inside Out”) and Paul’s Wintersleep bandmate, Tim D’Eon. The previous album featured Monaghan (Paul recorded the record with FR in Scotland) and D’Eon too but also had Simone Pace of Blonde Redhead. This new one, however, finds Chant helming production duties, recorded by Paul in isolation before being sent across the Atlantic, between Halifax/K’jipuktuk and Chant’s studio in Bristol. There’s something really reflective of the Transatlantic travels in the music and also in the album artwork that features striated rock, an image taken by Yarmouth-based photographer Bill Curry.

“Unlike previous releases, ‘Red Mist’ started as a song title before we wrote any instrumentation or lyrics for it,” says guitarist Steven Jones. He adds: “Based on the title alone, we knew the song had to be our heaviest yet. Something sporadic and intense which ebbs and flows, and we ended up with a song that almost mimics each emotional phase when ‘seeing red’ – culminating in a fit of rage. It was a new challenge for us and in the end, we couldn’t be happier with the final result. The song also includes a full orchestral accompaniment throughout its duration and is the most we’ve experimented with synth. With ‘Red Mist’ we were keen to expand on the sound we had already created for ourselves, and I believe we’ve achieved that.”
