First released over 40 years ago by Bluegrass Hall of Famer Larry Sparks, and soon after by the legendary Ralph Stanley (with a young Keith Whitley singing lead), the song — written by John B. Preston while he was in solitary confinement during one of the several times he was incarcerated — quickly became a favorite for its haunting, mournful melody and stark, direct lyrics that capture both the sadness of loss and the promise of eternal life.

John Driskell Hopkins today shares “I Hate To See Good Whiskey Go To Waste”. As its title might infer, this single serves up a melancholy bar room vignette. Hopkins explains,”The title is something that my friend (and veteran Music Row songwriter) Jerry Salley came up with. We went round and round with different angles on how to bring that title to life, and ultimately were drawn towards whiskey’s ability to “numb an old heartache”. The jury is still out on whether or not this method is actually effective.”
Reflecting on the arrangement, which shifts between a full electric backing band and solo vocals, Hopkins notes “I love the way this song is stripped down to just the vocal in sections. It really conveys the personal nature of the heartache.”

JAKE BUGG SHARES ALL I NEED (FRANKY WAH REMIX)
ollowing the release of his new single and cinematic short film All I Need, Jake Bugg has shared an alternate version of the track with a remix by Franky Wah, which follows the Rudimental remix released at the end of last year.
All I Need has received acclaim from fans and media alike since its release last month, with support from the likes BBC Radio 1, where Greg James made the track his Breakfast Show ‘Record of the Week’, and Radio X. While exploring themes of repression and the nature of control, the music video takes the shape of a stylized psychological thriller, inspired by films like Alfred Hitchcock’s “Spellbound”, Panos Cosmatos’s “Mandy” and “Beyond the Black Rainbow”. The video pays homage to the work of Carl Jung, not only from it’s characters and psychoanalytical framing, but primarily through its main subject matter: confronting one’s own shadow.
