H.C. McEntire releases cover of Tammy Wynette’s “’Til I Get It Right” ahead of next week’s full-band concert film

H.C. McEntire’s August-released album Eno Axis revealed itself to be a haven of dry land amidst the muck and mire that was 2020. Pitchfork gave the album an 8.1, raving, “With spacious live takes and poetic lyricism, the North Carolina songwriter’s second album brings order to the chaos of the day. Step inside Eno Axis and things immediately fall into place.”

Arriving today is McEntire’s cover of “’Til I Get It Right,” a song once made famous by Tammy Wynette. Recorded during the Eno Axis sessions in Kernsville, NC, the song has been a staple of McEntire’s repertoire for a few years now, including a stellar rendition at the MRG30 festival.

Afrobeat singer Kelvyn Boy’s love of music started in church. His father sang in the choir and raised his son (born Kelvyn Brown) on gospel, reggae greats like Lucky Dube and country music, which Kelvyn Boy says shares many of the same chord progressions as church music. By 2010, when he was 19, he started performing genre-spanning covers at local Assin Fosu pubs and noticed how many people would approach him afterward to ask if he had his own music. “That was when I realized what I could do,” he recalls.

Combining digitally-processed recordings of wind and water with analog synthesizers and chamber orchestra, Elori Saxl’s The Blue of Distance begins as a meditation on the effect of technology on our relationship with land/nature/place but ultimately evolves to be more of a reflection on longing and memory. The phrase “the Blue of Distance” was coined by Rebecca Solnit in A Field Guide to Getting Lost and refers to the phenomenon of faraway mountains appearing blue due to light particles getting lost over distance. The album, mastered by Taylor Deupree, is out January 22nd on Western Vinyl.

Legendary producer John Fryer presents his latest single ‘Nocturnal’ under the Black Needle Noise moniker, featuring Croatian-Australian soprano Helena Mamich.

This single follows close on the trails of BNN’s ‘These Mortal Covers’ album, a covers-based album, released via Cleopatra Records and involving collaborations with a handful of varied vocalists, including Anjela Piccard, Pinky Turzo, Beca, Tom Berger, Magic Rebecca Coseboom, and Betty X.

“I had made the music and was talking to my good friend Marija Buljeta and said I was looking for an opera singer for it and as luck would have it she was friends with Helena Mamich, who she recommended to me and the rest is herstory as they say. A beautiful boy named Carson from Highercroft, Blackburn, passed away on the evening of 17th November 2020. He had only recently turned three.

‘A Candle For Carson’ was made in honour of Carson in the hope he would pull through his recent operation and be home with his two sisters and mum and dad this Christmas, but it was not to be. The song remains more poignant somehow and just shows the effect and love we thankfully have and share with each other when our precious lives are truly at stake.

Following a string of stellar singles drawn from his forthcoming debut album times, London-based multi-instrumentalist and producer SG Lewis today reveals the album’s opening track “Time” – a soaring disco groove featuring legendary Canadian singer Rhye.

Speaking about the track, SG reveals, “‘Time’ is a song that is central to the album thematically and sonically. Rhye has one of the most unique and distinctive voices out there, and I’ve been a fan for so long. We wrote the song at Rhye’s studio after watching the sun set in Topanga Canyon, a memory which makes this song even more special to me,” he explains. “The beat initially started from a piano loop and a Dennis Edwards sample TEED had started working on with Julian, which I then turned into the instrumental late one night in Nashville.”
