This is the first full-length release from Barbarossa – real name James Mathé – since his BBC 6 Music-tipped 2018 record, Lier, an album that also found him touring in support of This Is The Kit and Poliça. Love Here Listen is a real change in sound, however, with James shedding the folk aesthetics further (he was previously signed to Fence Collective, home to Pictish Trail, Seamus Fogerty, etc for his early albums) for something much more electronically immersive, teaming up this time with the in-demand Dummy and Red Bull-back producer, Ghost Culture who’s recent work includes Kelly Lee Owens and Daniel Avery. The pair worked with a limited range of vintage synths on the new record – a Mono Poly, Korg MS-20 a Roland SH-101 and a Juno 108 borrowed from the local skate store Palm Bay Skates – with the recordings bounced down to Mathé’s Fostex R8 reel to reel to give it an undeniable warmth.

His earnest vocal, matched with sparse and melancholy piano accompaniment displays real bravery and confidence in pairing the song back to its bare foundations.
“We called this song Lullaby because it’s about our duty to guard always the dreams of our beloved ones that seem so fragile and delicate. The song surprisingly conveys a combination of furious strength and incredible tenderness. By sound this song is close to Crematory with some vibes of Mudvayne. With a powerful and modern guitar riff and beautiful melody, supported of strings, this song has great energy in combination with romantic vibes.”

I tentatively opened an eye. Fourth fret. I picked up a pen as ideas began to fizz, but thought better of it, had a beer and wrote it later.”
