Donny Hathaway This Christmas Celebrates 50th Anniversary With New Animated Video

When Grammy®-winning singer-songwriter Donny Hathaway recorded “This Christmas” in 1970, he hoped the song would be embraced as the first black Christmas carol, one authored and performed by African Americans. It took a few years, but the song eventually achieved a level of success that greatly exceeded Hathaway’s dreams. 50 years later, “This Christmas” is recognized as a holiday standard, one that’s been recorded by a diverse group of artists including Destiny’s Child, Usher, Mary J. Blige, Lady A, and more recently Pentatonix, Pink Sweat$, and Jess Glynne, just to name a few.

Canyons are places of mystery and beauty. The interesting thing is, while they are one of the great wonders in the history of planet earth and attract scientists of all kinds of disciplines, they have also been a popular retreat for artists and musicians. You will have heard of Topanga Canyon, Rickie Lee Jones and Chicago recorded here. Laurel Canyon is even more well known, a mythical place where Crosby, Stills & Nash developed their unique vocal sound while hanging around Mama Cass’ place. Or was it in Joni Mitchell’s house on Lookout Mountain? Ok, you get the picture. There is something unexplainable, almost magical going on in canyons.

Charlee Remitz Releases “Heaven’s a Scary Place” – New Album Out 12/18

The fearless new song highlights Charlee’s incredible strength as a talented songwriter, and her thought-provoking lyrics shine over moody 80s synths. Says Charlee, “On every album, I have one song that takes no hostages. This is that one song. It orbits around this lyric: ‘I bet if Jesus walked into heaven, he’d think he was lost.’ At least, this is true of the heaven that’s exclusive to cis-gendered white people who can pay for their sins. I want to describe the anger I feel towards the Catholic Church, in particular, eloquently, but all I can think to do is start screaming at the top of my lungs. This divine protection of rapists, condemnation of sex workers and willful ignorance towards men paying for sex, it’s so backwards and disgusting, and it makes faith sound like a dirty word.”

E.L.E. 1 made good on the increasingly bombastic delivery and cutting-edge aesthetic Bus delivered with When Disaster Strikes, pushing the MC’s star further into the pop stratosphere while supplying canonical entries like “Gimme Some More” and “What’s It Gonna Be?!” To deliver its sequel, then—some 22 years later and also after a near decade-long album hiatus—would mean that Busta holds this latest work in the very highest esteem, believing that over the course of a now three-decade-long career, his music-making ability hasn’t wavered a bit. Luckily for us, nobody knows Busta better than he does.
