He’s from Texas but we both happened to be in L.A. at the same time, which was lucky as he was on my all-time wish list. When we were in the studio, I told him the story about Ann Druyan and Carl Sagan and how her love-struck brain waves were sent out into space on the Voyager’s Golden Record. And this song came out of that.”

Composer Danny Elfman Signs to ANTI- / Epitaph, Watch Eye-Popping New Video For “Happy”

“I always enjoyed Halloween because it was a night to let loose, to become something or someone else,” said renowned film composer Danny Elfman, known for his eccentric and macabre collaborations with director Tim Burton. “[Halloween is] a night to celebrate the dead, and ghosts and monsters of all variety. A night for mutants, zombies, vampires, misfits, and miscreants to celebrate themselves and each other. And, aligned with the Mexican holiday Dia De Los Muertos, a night to celebrate departed spirits… and for me, a night to laugh in death’s face (and feel safe doing so).”

Queer Pop Artist Mike Taveira Releases New Single/Video “Karma”

“Karma” is the breakup anthem for anyone who feels like their ex has yet received the karma they deserve. It’s for those of us who have been left broken and questioning the entire relationship, only for our ex-partner to seemingly move along in the world with no trouble. “I do believe in karma and I do believe she is coming. She just likes to wait for the perfect timing and I was impatient, which led to the song,” Taveira writes. The pairing video, which was created in collaboration with Canada’s Drag Race star Lemon, showcases how it feels when karma just won’t give you a break: “We wanted to have a simple but effective video to showcase how it feels to constantly receive karma on your end and the result came to dodgeballs being decked at my face.”

I wanted to use imagery of birth and rebirth to compliment the journey and resolution that takes place in the song.” Conor continues, “We love how it turned out”.

Debut Album Release: Experimental Pop Artist Mima Good Shares “Hydra”

The Hydra is a giant 9-headed serpent that Hercules has to fight in Greek mythology. When he cuts off one head, two more grow in its place. For Mima, this serves as a metaphor for the constant personal and collective battle against systems of oppression. “When I released the Good Girl EP, I felt relieved that I had conquered my greatest personal trauma. Yet, I found that once I eliminated that monster, I found others lurking beneath the surface. I wanted so badly to feel free from the grips of my abuser, the patriarchy, trauma, but I realized how much my fear is tied to the collective. No one is free until everyone is free.”

Admitting “I wish that I could tell you that I know how to love you, but I don’t even know how to love myself” in the song’s confessional chorus, “Love Myself” transparently recounts Trust’s personal growth following a substantial breakup and her realization that self-worth is as valuable in a relationship as the love we receive.

West Philadelphia Orchestra’s raucously eclectic brass protest anthem (+ animated video!) “Amerika the Grave”

Out October 27th via The Giving Groove, “Amerika the Grave” originated shortly after “A Clarion Call For Justice,” a protest event organized by trombonist Jeff Bradshaw during the weeks following the murder of George Floyd. The gathering occurred in June on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, with a performance by West Philadelphia Orchestra and hundreds of horn players. “That was actually the first time that many of us had played music with other people for like three months,” says Mervine, who founded the group way back in 2006. “It was a completely overwhelming experience.”

“I wrote this one when I thought of my first love and how it was good, but it was also really toxic, I wanted to be out of it, but every time we kissed I felt like, ‘Fuck, I can’t move,'” Ben shared. “It was like looking at Medusa and turning to stone. I was stuck in a bad relationship.”
