Deep Sea Diver pulled out all the stops on the way to release day, from announcing the album with an ingenious video for “Lights Out” featuring the song’s guitar tabs, to enlisting Sharon Van Etten to sing a stunning guest verse on the album’s title track. The latter garnered praise from all corners, with Teen Vogue calling it “an electric guitar-laden rock n’ roll dream,” and Guitar World noting that “the track’s brash, chunky guitar leads to add an otherworldly, gothic touch to this otherwise radio- and even dancefloor-primed slice of indie perfection.” Consequence of Sound said that “Dobson’s sharp guitar work crunches and buzzes beneath them, serving as another voice altogether,” but it was perhaps American Songwriter that put it most succinctly — “In the pantheon of guitarists in the 21st Century, guitarist Jessica Dobson deserves high placement on that roll call.”

“When Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Nina Pop, and George Floyd’s murders sparked a global uprising, I faced the harsh reality that as an Asian American woman, I am both a beneficiary of white privilege, and victim of systemic racism. To understand how I could be a more active part of the country’s healing from racial injustices, I started to do more research. As listened to Tamika Palmer talk about the memory of her daughter, “Somebody’s Beloved” came to me. “Somebody’s Beloved” is a delicate yet powerful song that we hope can soften the vitriol prevalent in today’s polarized culture.” – MILCK

Hoge’s new album Tiny Little Movies is full of these personal truths of his—most of which are timely, sharp jabs at the current state of politics—but none are as poignant as “Con Man Blues,” a 2 minute, 19-second barn burner aimed at the head “con man” in charge. “This song was written as a direct rebuttal to not just the failures, but the abject cruelty of so many of our current leaders; led by one ultimate con man for certain,” says Hoge.
