CD24 is a highly glycosylated protein present on the cell surface. The protein is highly expressed in the tumor tissue and is responsible for the survival of cancer cells and tissues. The protein makes the cancer cell invisible at the immune checkpoints making the survival of cancer cells possible.
To confirm the role of CD24 in cancer, mutant cells with removed CD24 were treated with CD24 antibodies and macrophage cells. The cells were eaten by macrophages but were not affected by CD24 antibodies as no surface CD24 protein was present.
