At the same time as recording their third full-length album, former Catholic chorister and lead vocalist of Black Country rock trio God Damn, Thomas Edward, was suspended from his teaching job for destroying bibles. “It really wasn’t even that satanic, I felt that little baptised choir boy kick in as I was ‘recycling’ them and said “Lord have mercy on me”. A colleague filmed the whole thing and a member of staff emailed it into the school, pretending to be a put-out parent. I think I saw it as separating the state from religion.” Themes of religion, spirituality, society and politics permeate throughout their freshly announced forthcoming self-titled album out 14th February on One Little Indian Records.

Atlanta underground rock provocateurs Black Lips have announced that their new LP, Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart, is set for release January 24th on Fire Records/VICE. Boasting an unapologetic southern-fried twang, the twelve track collection marks the quintet’s most pronounced dalliance with country music yet, with a clang and harmony that is unmistakably the inimitable sound and feel of the Black Lips. While the songcraft and playing is more sophisticated, Black Lips were determined to return to the raw sound that marked their early efforts. Recorded and co-produced with Nic Jodoin at Laurel Canyon’s legendary, newly reopened Valentine Recording Studios (which played host to Beach Boys and Bing Crosby before shuttering in 1979) without Pro-Tools and other contemporary technology, the band banged the album out directly to tape quickly and cheaply, resulting in their grimiest, most dangerous, and best collection of songs since the aughts.

“‘Unchained’ was originally inspired by the story of Brian Banks, an African-American professional football player wrongly accused of rape, but it’s evolved into so much more than just that,” explains Devon Gilfillian. “It’s an anthem for anyone that has been set back by unfair/unjust challenges in their life. It’s a song about empowering yourself to become your greatest potential no matter what tries to stand in your way.”

Check Out AFTERMATH Lyric Video for “Scientists and Priest;”

“People find false comfort in either science or religion. The institutions have been corrupted and are used to divide the masses into two camps. It’s the perfect scam having people argue over what’s the truth. The truth is that organized religion and science are full of shit and used to deceive us and keep us fighting each other. Institutions are tools of suppression and none are better at it than the ones telling us to worship false idols and blindly believe in fake science.” — Kyriakos “Charlie” Tsiolis
