About Slave Play:
The old South lives on at the MacGregor Plantation—in the breeze, in the cotton fields…and in the crack of the whip. It’s an antebellum fever-dream, where fear and desire entwine in the looming shadow of the Master’s House. Jim trembles as Kaneisha handles melons in the cottage, Alana perspires in time with the plucking of Phillip’s fiddle in the boudoir, while Dustin cowers at the heel of Gary’s big, black boot in the barn. Nothing is as it seems, and yet everything is as it seems.

In this provocative and explosive new play, Jeremy O. Harris rips apart history to shed new light on the nexus of race, gender and sexuality in 21st century America. Obie Award winner Robert O’Hara directs.

Author J.J. Anselmi to Release ‘Doomed to Fail: The Incredibly Loud History of Doom, Sludge, and Post-metal’ February 11, 2020

In 1968, Black Sabbath turned the rock music world on its head by playing blues-based music at a snail’s pace through thundering amps, essentially forging a sonic template for what would―years later―become known as doom metal. In the decades that would follow the Sab’s rise, myriad masters of riff followed suit: Bang, Sir Lord Baltimore, Lucifer’s Friend, Pentagram, Uriah Heep, and many more, pushing the style in darker directions and deeper underground. On February 11, 2020, Rare Bird Books will release Doomed to Fail: The Incredibly Loud History of Doom, Sludge, and Post-metal, from author and musician J.J. Anselmi. The 312 page tome dives deep into heavy music’s dungeon, exploring the tectonic timeline of the weightiest music the world has ever heard, and tracing doom, sludge, and post-metal as their own distinct (and incredibly loud) traditions. “In November 2015, while living more than 2,000 miles apart, cousins David and Chad sparked up a musical collaboration based on demos sent back-and-forth, and song ideas shared over the phone. During a writing trip spent holed up in a basement studio in Chad’s hometown of Toronto, the two started experimenting with vintage synthesizers and throwback hip-hop drum loops. It was a radical departure from the stripped-back folk of their earlier sound.”
