Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) announces first solo album in 35 years for Dais Records

Stephen Mallinder, co-founder and frontman of the iconic Cabaret Voltaire, has returned with his first solo album in over 35 years: Um Dada. Laced with leftfield house and cut-up sound collages, Um Dada is a melding of energies that are an exercise in simplicity and motion. Sincere, playful realism that beckons your body to move, always reminding you to never take yourself too seriously without forfeiting your agency.

While steering Cabaret Voltaire through the 1980’s, Mallinder was already busy piecing together his first solo album entitled “Pow Wow”, which would help define Mallinder’s interest in the more leftfield electro sounds shaping England at the time. It was this diverse and abstract hybrid that helped inspire generations of artists and musicians through steeping raw machine funk within the whimsical and absurdist ideology.

Dante Matas – “Talking To Yourself”

“I had my friends and family send me clips reading really cliche motivational quotes and used them to create a chaotic collage of unprecedented optimism that appears midway through the song. Even though the quotes are so positive, the disorienting blend of the voices talking over each other makes the collage sound more like a mass miscommunication.”

DEATH BY FUNGI: Indian Hardcore pioneers release new EP

This was followed by several live shows and another EP, titled In Dearth Of, in 2016. This release as well as 2017’s split with Indian sludge band Shepherd, cemented the sound and style DBF are known for in their country — a chaotic, frantic and outspoken style of hardcore that is technical in its delivery while also referencing more melodic acts. Taking inspiration from a wide spectrum of sonic sources, ranging from the likes of Converge and Shai Hulud to Propagandhi, DBF forge a contemporary hardcore/punk sound with intelligent songwriting and infectious guitar-work.
