The video was directed by Scottish animator Gordon Howie, who drew inspiration from mid-century animations for the overall style as the heroine of the video matches wits with a suave, cocktail-drinking, rug-cutting Satan. “Devil Horns” comes right before the release of Davina and the Vagabonds’ new album, SUGAR DROPS, out next Friday, August 2nd.

Not a word is spoken. Industries lumber on, cars speed away, and water pollution skyrockets – mayflies die. This vital part of the world’s natural ecosystem collapses, today, right now. As the world debates climate change, industrialization, and pollution the world is collapsing on itself right in front of us, silently. This highly vulnerable insect needs an anthem, we need an anthem, an awakening. “Mayflies” attempts to shift a difficult conversation from what could happen – TO WHAT IS ALREADY HAPPENING.

Born and bred in London, John Hoyles moved to Sweden in his early teens where he became the lead guitarist in the legendary doom metal band Witchcraft in the year 2000. Nine years later he founded the band Spiders, and in 2016, he formed the group Big Kizz, together with his friend Axel Sjöberg from Graveyard. Whether creating in tandem with his fellow musicians or flying solo on his own, Hoyles creates music from the heart: some punk, pub rock, a little 70’s glitter, heavy psych and a touch of vintage metal. His playing and singing are honest and accomplished while his warm, wicked tone is unmistakable.

“It’s just me venting about everything,” Gates says about the new song. “It’s all facts. Sometimes, venting is the best thing you can do to cleanse your heart. I’m not going to let the pain from my past affect my future. You need to let go of unresolved grief. Don’t keep it all bottled inside.”
“Artistically, ‘Strange Day,’ as well as the rest of the new album, offers a bit more restraint than his previous music, while dropping cultural and literary references from Melville and Shiva to Donald Duck.
“‘Strange Day’ opens on austere guitar riffs flowing into an innovative, even eccentric, melody, reminiscent of Talking Heads covering The Kinks. Raw, dirty guitars ride a measured beat, as Squires’ voice takes on a brooding, philosophical tone. The lyrics alternate between puzzled meditation and ironic nonchalance.” – Popdust
