Matt The Fucking Rapper’s flow has a fantastical unhinged quality on “Wake Up Do Better”. His lyrics feel on point while they opt for a pitch perfect storytelling alongside a surprisingly wide amount of references that filter into the mix. From Drake disses to reflection on a life lived to the fullest, Matt The Fucking Rapper embarks on a grandiose trip. Usage of nimble beats and elastic grooves nicely capture the zeitgeist in the best way possible. By far the highlight of the album, his voice has a solid clear-eyed intensity to it. Samples have a unique quality to them for he draws from pop, classical, jazz, and more giving the whole of the experience a kaleidoscopic feel.

The album’s tone gets set with the powerful “Wake Up Dyskfunctional” as the crisp beats propel the track forward. On “Wake Up Cool Guy” goes for an expansive, minimal take. Nearly meditative the track has a darkness permeating it. A great series of verses roll through on the album highlight, the wild “Wake Up Sayless”. Glitch effects work wonders on the disorienting “Wake Up The Guise”. He shows off his playfulness as he proclaims ‘Release the Futures’ with “Wake Up Like A Champion”. With the weird haunted quality of “Wake Up No Tomorrow” Matt The Fucking Rapper goes for a surrealist take, that at times taps into Flying Lotus’ strange grooves.
“Wake Up Do Better” shows off Matt The Fucking Rapper’s attention to detail with a raw, gritty sound that dominates the whole of the album.
