Maya de Vitry releases full-length Adaptations on Jan. 25

Maya de Vitry morphs and emerges with her own sound on Adaptations, her first full-length album following the disbanding of critically-acclaimed string band, The Stray Birds. Out January 25th, Adaptations was born in solitude but ultimately celebrates authentic human connection and the possibilities of vulnerability. Written and recorded in 2016 and 2017, Maya found herself drawing from a new well, and reckoning with a body of work that patiently asked to live under her own name — and she also found herself facing the difficult growth required of her to fully live her way into these particular songs. Lindsay Lou, Courtney Hartman, and Oliver Wood, to name a few, were eager to lend a hand and a voice to the project.

Sophie Strauss Reclaims Power Over Femininity With Her Album ‘Hard Study’

Sophie Strauss is solidifying her narrative of being a shameless woman in a male-dominated world with her debut album Hard Study, out today! The album is an exploration of all the spaces in between the headlines of what we’re told it should mean to be a woman. It isn’t always confident and fearless, it’s honest. If one thing is clear with Hard Study, it’s that Strauss knows herself. She knows who she is as a modern, queer woman and what that means in today’s ever-politicised world. Strauss goes deep into the nooks and crannies of toxic masculinity, finding the little places we forget it exists, even thrives, and exposes them. But in the end, Hard Study isn’t ever really about men at all; it’s a love letter to the women existing despite them.

Marissa Nadler guests on Machinefabriek’s “VIII”

With Voices is the newest recording by Dutch composer Rutger Zuydervelt under the moniker Machinefabriek. True to its title, the album’s eight pieces exhibit Zuydervelt’s use of cassette recorders, tone generators, radios, synths, and other hifi curio to construct bewildering aural architecture around vocal work from Peter Broderick, Marissa Nadler, Richard Youngs, Chantal Acda, Terence Hannum (of Locrian) and others. These human voices are featured as musical instruments rather than mere vehicles of lyrical content, resulting in a sub-linguistic mosaic of primordially stirring moods.
