Guts Club’s ‘Trench Foot’ tour kicks off on August 9th

In an interview with Very Local New Orleans Guts Club’s Lindsey Baker talks about why she made the decision to go from a solo act to a full-blown electric band for the new album, Trench Foot, which is out now.

“No one respects the solo acoustic artist unless it’s somebody that pre-exists outside of that performance that they’re doing. No one gives a shit about a girl on a chair with a little parlor guitar. You get like a few creepy dudes but most people wanna just like talk over you,” she said. “I felt like the lyrics were important. While you can probably hear them better and make them out on an acoustic record, to perform them in a bar with a bunch of people talking over you is a fucking bummer.”

new Baauer video

This is Baauer’s first single since his acclaimed debut album surprised critics in 2016, proving once and for all there was more to Harrison Rodrigues than his viral sensation ‘Harlem Shake’. Baauer’s main releases have continued to prove his competence extend further into smart, electronic pop records as much as brash dance music. For the last 4 years his song with Alunageorge and Rae Sremmurd – “One Touch” – has outstripped the plays of Harlem Shake. And with production work for JAY Z, A$AP Rocky, Future & Pusha T he’s put cynicism to rest on his capabilities as a hip hop producer.

New folk single from Milwaukee duo Nickel&Rose

“Americana” seamlessly blends American and traditional African folk motifs, and the songwriting of Carl Nichols and Johanna Rose are the bridge upon which those influences meet. Highlighted within the music’s steady measures are Nichols’ fingerstyle guitar part a la Mississippi John Hurt, and a West-African Bajourou guitar solo. Rose creates a dramatic effect with bowed upright bass that smooths the melody into a haunting cadence. The deeper meaning within the lyrics tells the story of Africa’s forgotten influence on American music, which Nichols explains. “Lyrically this song explores my personal experience as a black person growing up with black heroes in folk and rock music and growing up to feel as an outsider within ‘Americana’. I touch on the lack of diversity in the audience, the lack of credit given to black artists and how black Americans have been denied access to their own culture.”

FALCUN: Traditional Heavy Metal from Kolkata, India

ndian metal bands have steadily been setting their feet across the globe for the last two decades. Bands from Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state, are somehow late to join in the league with their compatriots as they have recently started to partake in this glorious invasion. Within its three decades of existence, the Indian metal scene has witnessed less than a handful of traditional heavy metal bands. Suffice it to say that the primeval style of heavy metal music is scarcer than hen’s teeth in India.

Produced and mixed by Cameron Webb, Is This Thing Cursed? is the first Alkaline Trio album written almost entirely in the studio. According to the band, Is This Thing Cursed? is a cousin or sibling to Fire. Co-lead vocalist and bassist Dan Andriano explains, “the songwriting process is almost like what it was back in the day. “Get You Alone” is the first R&B song that I have written and arranged for the band. Recorded in one take, it features a 4-minute repris, which can also be heard on Spotify/Apple Music, that was fully improvised in the studio. At the time of writing, I was wanting to move forward in a personal relationship with a different sort of outlook – one where we could both come out on top and grow, regardless of whether that meant growing together or apart. Ultimately, “Get You Alone” is about wanting somebody to meet you halfway. – Conrad The Third

The Prodigy new single, ‘Need Some1,’ out now + new album announced

Presenting ‘Need Some1’, the pounding first single from The Prodigy’s forthcoming album. It is, if you like, vintage futurism, a banger that features a classic house diva vocal sample from Loleatta Holloway (the original “voice” of Black Box’s ‘Ride On Time’). “I wanted to write something that had downtempo swagger, but still felt dangerous,” says the band’s Liam Howlett, introducing the single alongside an explosive video shot in Manila by Paco Raterta. “After being sent loads of pedestrian video director showreels,” says Liam, “Paco’s style stood out and punched me in the face: just so raw and original-looking, I knew he was the man for us. The finished video has such violent edge and style and looks like nothing else we have seen – to us it’s only worth doing a video if you can make something original and exciting, which this is.”

The Hollow Ends share new single “Coddle Eyed” | New LP out 7/27

The song premiered via All Things Go where the band’s Zachary Schwartz shared, “What happens when the onset of despotism comes not with the despair of every individual beneath it, but to the sheer delight of many? There’s reason to believe that many millions among us do not fear, but indeed welcome inexorable authority. “True” subjects relish in the misfortune of apostates, and desperately seek the approval (and overlook the sins) of their masters. If given the choice, they’d rather watch the world and everyone in it burn alive than disavow their devotion. One may notice this desire to be ruled has noteworthy similarities to the symptoms of falling deeply in love. ‘Coddle Eyed’ is about finding one’s self passionately enamored with one’s own ruler, no matter how monstrous they may be.”

Introducing: Netherlands-based Mozes & the Firstborn release new single ‘Hello’

“We grow and develop by challenging ourselves: By taking risks that make us prone to failure, but also to success and achievement. It’s easy to get by in the good times. It’s in the rocky moments that we finds ourselves vulnerable and in the spotlight, pushed to our limits and forced to discover who we really are – even if that means stumbling a few times before we regain balance. Dynamic, vivacious, and driving, Mozes and the Firstborn’s “Hello” is an emphatic endorsement of stepping outside our comfort zones and asserting ourselves.” – Atwood Magazine

Out Now: Ice-T & Mr. X Release The Brutal E.P. (Electronic Beat Empire)

With artwork evocative of graphic novels and images of extraterrestrial biological entities in their music videos, Ice-T and Mr. X built a record label named Electronic Beat Empire. (EBE is also short for extraterrestrial biological entities.”) Ice-T & Mr. X’s The Brutal E.P. (Electronic Beat Empire) is out now.

The title track, The Brutal, is an aggressive tech-house blast of angry synthesizers and acid-house dissonance. Killer Die is a glitchy techno track with body-moving breakbeats and a hard, highly percussive element. The Crowdstock is pure techno with a razor-sharp melody that mercilessly shreds the heavy bassline like shards of broken glass. Sitting In Bangkok, Waiting For My Chics exhibits Far East influences in its minor chords with a tweaky bounce. My Ex Girl Took My Money is a sumptuous, Berlin-inspired tech-house track full of gritty edge and thick 4/4 beats that support expansive, hollow-tubed synths. Save It For The Haters draws on trap and twists this tune around a speedy, double-timed percussion as swaggering as it is hypnotic. The Brutal is a murderous E.P. of irresistibly catchy, computer-based music.
