Wesley Jensen & the Penny Arcade deliver a joyous Pet Sounds-inspired cut with “Everything”

Taking a page out of the Brian Wilson songbook, Wesley Jensen & the Penny Arcade deliver a glistening retro-pop tune that harkens back to the golden age of 60s baroque. Premiering on Atwood Magazine, “Everything” is the lead single from the upcoming EP Something New. Both musically and lyrically complex, the track is chalk full of warm textures and orchestral layers all while sounding inherently modern. Jensen says the track deals with themes “trying to survive in the world and what it means to find success.”

Dana Murray Releases New Album “Negro Manifesto” Via Ropeadope Records

Musician, producer and educator Dana Murray has released his socially conscious album Negro Manifesto via Ropeadope Records. Blending jazz, hip-hop, spoken word and more the album seeks the true roots of the system that creates and perpetuates injustice. Not a tidy story with simple answers – it’s a noisy and deep chasm of universal struggle. Negro Manifesto stands as a summary of history and a challenging artistic piece, touching on racism and sexism in the capitalist paradigm. It evokes artists from Gil-Scott Heron to Hip-Hop activists The Goats, from Coltrane to Philip Glass. Social justice movements need more than just tough stories and hopeful mantras. Dana Murray delivers for us a testimony of truth, challenge, with a call to engagement.

American Songwriter premiered Clint Michigan’s animated video for “Shirt Off”

“Animated by Quelle Chris, the video follows a young character plagued by negativity and insecurity about their body, wandering a cityscape alone as monsters and villains taunt and tease. The song itself, which hinges on the fear of baring one’s physical body to another person, is a personal one for Asay, who, in press materials for Centuries, reveals that the album grapples with his real-life struggles, including “[his] body, living with HIV, [his] childhood.”‘ – American Songwriter/Brittney McKenna

Yonatan Gat has just shared Universalists’ opening track “Cue the Machines”. The undefinable track opens with an Italo-Spanish choir recorded by Alan Lomax in 1950s Genoa – but it only takes 20 seconds for the voices get manipulated, chopped and mangled beyond recognition into stuttering rhythms below Yonatan’s live band – guitar, bass, saxophone and drums working up an uncontrollable maelstrom of punk and free jazz.

Created during Zaytoven’s SXSW producer seminar, “The Navy” emphasizes the melodic gifts of both artists, with Pinch effortlessly delivering impeccable tunes over Zaytoven’s arpeggiated keys, dramatic, pitch-shifted vocals, and pulsating bass.
