PREMIERE: Cloud Cult’s Music For The Film The Great Alone

If you know the Minnesota band Cloud Cult, either from their appearances on Soundcheck or from their numerous recordings and tours, you know that singer/instrumentalist Craig Minowa and his crew are as visually attuned a group of musicians as you’re likely to find. They’ve made a series of short films, and their tours for many years included not only the players but two artists as well, who would do live paintings in response to that night’s set, so that each show resulted in two finished canvases. Their last project, The Seeker, was both a cycle of connected songs and a mostly silent (except for those songs) film. Cloud Cult’s emotive, orchestral brand of indie rock is perfectly suited to the movies, and today we premiere a track from Minowa’s score to the film The Great Alone, a documentary about the unlikely comeback story of Iditarod champion Lance Mackey. Set as it is in the Arctic, the soundtrack has stretches that evoke the vast expanse of the frozen North; but this piece, called “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t,” has a pulsating, determined rhythm that reflects Mackey’s determination to overcome the odds.

Montreal’s Look Vibrant announces debut LP, shares “My Nerves” video

The Up Here Place, the debut album from Montreal’s noise-pop quartet Look Vibrant, is a wonderpot of musical inventiveness and immediacy, boiling over with energy and steaming into bliss. After releasing two singles of pure noise music (Plateau and Sweater in the Lake), and an EP of polished indie pop (Only Qualms), on their debut album the band has perfectly combined these two elements into a product that is equally refined and unhinged. The songs teeter on the brink, threatening to fall apart at your feet, while somehow remaining intact by a logic that is uniquely Look Vibrant. Thematically, the album is an exploration of naive ambition, the constant need to reach ever growing heights, and the inevitable sharp drop that comes in its wake.

ZGTO (Shigeto + ZelooperZ) share short film ‘A Piece of the Geto’, streaming now

In a city famed for its disparate and varied musical excellence, the Detroit-based alignment of feted electronic artist and producer Shigeto aka Zach Saginaw and rapidly rising Bruiser Brigade member ZelooperZ was a natural thing. Introduced by mutual friends in the city, an instant bond was formed, and ZGTO was born. Over a two-year period, ZelooperZ and Shigeto would collaborate and experiment, honing their sound without any preconceived notions of its final form or an eventual release. Eventually and inevitably though, the full length record A Piece Of the Geto transpired, released last summer on Ghostly International and Third Man Records.

Saintseneca Release New Song “The Wandering Star”

Ohio’s Saintseneca revealed new song “The Wandering Star” for the holidays. “The luminous, fingerpicked song is warm and reminiscent of Sufjan Stevens,” said Pitchfork. “But Saintseneca finds a way to make a holiday trope much weirder and more mystical.” Stereogum agrees, saying that “The Wandering Star” begins “like a Carrie & Lowell-era Sufjan song before introducing a tinny beat and eventually exploding out into psychedelia.”

Marcel Alexander – “Got Nothing”

Marcel Alexander delivers his first release of 2018, “Got Nothing.” The record serves as the first single from Marcel Alexander’s new project, “IV Songs In Winter” scheduled to release this year. “Got Nothing” is a really catchy record with a dark and smooth beat by production duo, Slow Kings. Marcel describes the record, “I chose this song to be the single because it has a different sound and flow from what everyone else is on right now. It’s catchy and relatable. There are people who say they on the grind but they actually aren’t doing anything, and then there are people who have nothing that are trying to get something in life. I’ve seen it and live it everyday.”
