Wasiu – “Angry Black Man”

“As a black man in North America, I constantly have to deal with fighting Stereotypes,” explains Wasiu. “Amongst them is the ‘Angry Black Man’ one. As a kid I often found myself suppressing my feelings for fear of being labeled as an ‘angry black man’. But growing up I realized that I had every right to not only be mad but express my anger. That’s exactly what this record is. An explosion of repressed aggression and expression. It’s my response to that motherfucka in high school who said, ‘Why are you so mad, slavery and racism is over you’re just being lazy.’ High Klassified provided me a thunderous beat. The way those drums hit so aggressively, made me channel my anger and go raw on this record. Usually, the rappers on HK’s songs are melodic or on that new wave of cadence-based type stuff (for example, ‘Comin Out Strong’ by The Weeknd ft. Future). I think I’m the first one to rap some heavy bars over his production.”

Louise Goffin premieres new video

Sometimes recordings result from carefully made plans; sometimes they come about through fortuitous serendipity. Louise Goffin’s latest single “Revenge” is one that arrived because of wonderful happenstance. In fact, it came about because of The Band. In March of 2017, Goffin was part of a star-studded Band tribute concert held in Los Angeles to raise funds for the non-profit Wild Honey Foundation. Backstage, she met her fellow performer, the young North Carolina-based singer/songwriter Skylar Gudasz. Bonding immediately, they decided to try writing a song together.

Noisey Premieres New HALFNOISE Video for “Scooby’s In The Back”

“Scooby’s in the Back” itself feels like a pure shot of hippie nostalgia, and, along with the rest of The Velvet Face EP, it’s especially indebted to bands like The Beach Boys, and The Beatles at their most psychedelic. Was the video, with its surf shots and rose tint, intended to reflect this? “The entire The Velvet Face EP to me was intended to feel like those older records like Pet Sounds and Rubber Soul,” he says, “so I wanted the video to match that. That Beach Boys-y, trippy feel was exactly what I was going for. I came across this amazing footage of New Zealand in the 70s, all shot on 16mm film, and I couldn’t see the video being anything besides that footage. I felt like I found gold.”
