FOO FIGHTERS: CONCRETE AND GOLD AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER NOW

So speaks Dave Grohl of the mission statement made manifest in Foo Fighters’ ninth epic, the aptly-titled Concrete and Gold, due out September 15 worldwide on Roswell Records / RCA Records and available for preorder now.

Just as Foo Fighters’ anthem of the summer “Run” “opens as a dreamy, slow burner then… quickly turns heavy as thunder” (BILLBOARD) with its “huge triumphant chorus” (STEREOGUM), Concrete and Gold marries some of the most insanely heavy FF riffs ever with lush harmonic complexities courtesy of a first time team-up with producer Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia, Pink).

This unlikely alliance came about through a bizarre sequence of surprise musical obsessions and chance encounters: Listening to the radio during a drive roughly four years ago, Grohl first heard “Again and Again” by Kurstin’s band The Bird & The Bee—”It blew my mind… it was so much more sophisticated than anything I’d ever heard and I became obsessed.”

Recruiting popular Toronto rapper Jazz Cartier for a verse, Ro boasts about driving Teslas, bedding models, and drinking in the VIP on this melodic banger. Premiered by Zane Lowe on Beats 1 and debuted on the web by Highsnobiety, “Prettiest” is a genre-bending cut from Ro Ransom, who blends singing with his rap-rhythmic dexterity into a vital cocktail. Public Service Broadcasting Share “People Will Always Need Coal”

Boasting of a ‘secure future in Welsh coal’ and ‘having enough coal for another four hundred years’, People Will Always Need Coal, the latest track from Public Service Broadcasting’s new album Every Valley, offers a window into the world of Welsh mining in its heyday. Laced with dark irony given the events that were to unfold not ten years later, the track documents the recruitment drive to persuade more young men to dive into a career that offers ‘money, lots of money, and security’. As the song unfolds to march climactically and ‘confidently to what may lie ahead’, an unsettling, foreboding feel undercuts an almost carnival atmosphere.

CLOAKROOM ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM FOR RELAPSE RECORDS

Northwest Indiana’s Cloakroom have announced that their second album Time Well is set for an August 18 release on CD/2xLP/digital formats, marking the band’s debut for the esteemed Relapse Records. Grandiose and deeply insular, Time Well is a work that transcends simple genre descriptors as the trio prove dually capable of conjuring lumbering walls of sound as well as forlorn Americana (as predicted by a recent Songs: Ohia cover the band posted to Bandcamp). Cloakroom occupies a space between worlds, crafting its unique brand of thoughtfully heavy music, something Relapse has long specialized in.

Hoop is drawn to touch in their “Drawn To You”

Hoop began as a recording project between songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Caitlin Roberts (Autococoon) and Nich Wilbur (Hungry Cloud Darkening) at Wilbur’s studio The Unknown in Anacortes, WA, while Roberts was living in town for eight months in 2014. The songs they created could only have been made in this pensive small-town environment. Wilbur’s minimalist taste and Roberts’ knack for melody merge to create a sound that is equal parts precise and soft. The recording exhibits sparse yet driving instrumentation and calm distortion, iced with Roberts’ moody, deliberate vocal performance, and Allyson Foster’s (Mount Eerie, LAKE, Stephen Steinbrink) hi-fi ear-candy vocal cameos. Super Genuine is grunge nostalgia augmented by the emotional intelligence of a 21st-century feminist and the sensibilities of a skilled producer.

The songs that comprise Holy Wars’ Mother EP were written in the aftermath of Leon’s period of grieving, with “Orphan” specifically referencing the acceptance stage, and how she felt after losing her parents. Leon re-emerged in early 2017, altered as an artist by her darkest days, and Holy Wars became an extrapolation of the turmoil she felt inside.
