True country music is rare in modern independent music. Crossover country is much more common; there’s psychobilly and cow-punk, of course, and those pseudo-bluegrass and twangy rock bands that stand with the tips of their mustaches in the mainstream—and that doesn’t even include so-called alt-country. Less common is real country—the solitary sort, heartbroken, kicking around in dirty boots.

Kormac – ‘I Believe’
Irish producer Kormac first earned praise with his debut album, described by Noisey as a “melodic bustle of jazz and hip hop, mashed together… from years of dedicated crate-digging”. His artistic crosshairs changed with sophomore album ‘Doorsteps’ where Kormac set about making his own organic bank of source material. The pursuit led him to work with Micah P. Hinson, Speech Debelle, and Bonobo vocalist Bajka; which gives you some indication of Kormac’s pliability. And, for the spoken word mash up ‘Another Screen’, Kormac recruited legendary Scottish novelist Irvine Welsh, the author of Trainspotting, Filth, The Acid House and Porno.

Jesse Woods’ muse is movement — a new town, a new job, a new situation — and the songs on Autoflower are borne of his ever-changing circumstances. Jesse Woods picks up stakes incessantly, skirting the edge of a scene long enough to observe it in raw detail and draw up its’ questionable characters. In each town, he works the odd jobs common to many musicians (recent stints include car garage attendant, hospital instrument salesman, Bass Pro Shop flunky) long enough to gather enough material to fill his quiver. Then he’ll quit and hit the road again. With a new city comes fresh inspiration: NYC, Marfa, Mexico City, and Lockhart are all recent homebases for Jesse.

Livingmore debut new track
The song is indicative of band’s upbeat, folk-rock sound and an optimistic, youthful energy. Livingston and Moore’s combined honeyed vocals flow over a fresh spin on classic blues chords and a country-like, percussive shuffle. The sound exudes an effortless symbiosis, which stems from the band members’ close relationship and interactive songwriting process. “Whether it’s lyrics or melody, we both tend to end up finishing each other’s songs and combine our personalities,” says Moore. “Never Slow Down” came about in just this way; on a plane ride back from a wedding, Moore wrote lyrics on a napkin and mused about slowing down, only to come home and find out that Livingston had written a song “amazingly opposite” to her own, about the anxiety and excitement in wanting to keep moving. She recalls Livingston showing her the lyrics, “What can I say / What can I do,” to which she immediately responded, “Keep up the pace / Catch up with you.”
